We would like to hold some kind of naming ceremony for our DS. Has anyone else done this, or have any ideas?

i haven't done this but think it's a good idea. not so hyprocritical as christening if you don't go to church and great excuse for a party. enjoy!

Look here we did this and I'm so glad we did.

For dd1 we had a party in the afternoon at our house and chose 'godparents' but didn't have anyone officiating. The godparents gave speeches and toasts.

We had a humanist naming ceremony for DS. If you CAT me I'd be happy to send you what we did and some samples the celebrant sent us when we were deciding what to include.

It took us a while to decide whether to have an official celebrant or just do something ourselves. I was glad we did go with the humanist celebrant -- for guests who had never been to a naming ceremony before it made it just similar enough to a christening to give them a reference point for what was going on, and it also imparted a touch of gravitas (plus she was very nice). I've been to naming ceremonies done by local authority registrars and while they were fine you are much more restricted in what you can include and where you can have them, while the humanist ones you can structure it however you want.

Sorry Lemonaid - am a bit new to this - what do I need to do to 'CAT' you?

It's "Contact A Mumsnetter" on the menu bar -- used to be "Contact Another Talker" so everyone refers to it as CAT.
