Would anyone be interested in doing a bible study?

I was thinking New Testament?

I hope this study is open to newcomers. I'm struck in this letter by the joy of it. Clearly it's hard times with persecution and hard work. But it's a labour of love founded on hope snd experienced with joy.

Good point well made Niminy, it does inspire me to carry on loving and encouraging others, even if it leaves me open to heartache when it’s not appreciated (to say the least!). Also, it’s reminded me to lean on the Trinity when in that devastated state.

Here's the next chunk of 1 Thessalonians:

You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.

You remember our labor and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was toward you believers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

The notes in my Bible say this letter was written when Paul was in Corinth in about 51 CE/AD, only a couple of decades after the death and resurrection of Jesus. So this is a very early in the story of Christianity, yet the gospel has spread well beyond Judea, and also outside the Jewish community -- the people he is writing to are gentiles, not Jews.

I wonder what kind of person Paul is comparing himself to in these lines?
And I wonder too what it was like to hear Paul's preaching.

Thank you Niminy I'm going to go away and have a think about this one and come back.

My bible says that in this section Paul is responding to doubts or criticisms about his ministry. Apparent his departure from thessalonica raised misgivings about Paul's commitment to their church. He defends himself be recalling the work he and his companions had done.

Not sure if that's helpful. I do have more notes than that on it.

What I like about Paul is that his words are backed up by actions, so when he says:

"we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others"

You can be sure that's exactly what he did. I suppose he was always trying to atone for his way of life before conversion, despite believing in redemption.

What jumps out at me is how they continued to spread the word despite the scorn they where faced with.

Hello all. I thought you guys might be interested - there's an organisation I've just found called Well-Watered Women, and as of yesterday they're leading an 8 week study of Ephesians. Here's the link. The reading programme is a few paragraphs down. wellwateredwomen.com/blog/join-our-ephesians-study-wordbeforeworld-30-day-challenge

If anyone decides to go for it, would be good to hear your thoughts!
