To paraphrase, it's something like 'even in the depths of despair, we sing'. Can anyone help, please? Many thanks Smile

Psalm 40 Verses 1-3?

"I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord"

psalm 130?

akkakk · 08/05/2017 22:51

A song of ascents.

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
8 He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.

Thanks for the quick replies! It wasn't quite those I was thinking of, there was definitely a 'we' involved rather than an 'I', but thanks for posting, those are good to read actually.

What about the beautiful words of the Russian orthodox kontakion - prayer for the dead or departed? Might that be what you're thinking of, particularly the last couple of lines?

Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant

Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy saints:
where sorrow and pain are no more;
neither sighing but life everlasting.
Thou only art immortal, the creator and maker of man:
and we are mortal formed from the dust of the earth,
and unto earth shall we return:
for so thou didst ordain,
when thou created me saying:
"Dust thou art und unto dust shalt thou return."
All we go down to the dust;
and weeping o'er the grave we make our song:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Is it Psalm 137 - how can we sing the song of the Lord in a foreign land?

InfiniteCurve · 08/05/2017 23:06

Negative or positive ( as in,cos of God we can sing whatever happens...)
As if negative it's making me think of Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon,there we sat down,yea we wept when we remembered Zion.We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof,for there they that carried us away captive required of us a song ,and they that wasted us required of us mirth,saying " sing us one of the songs of Zion".
How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?

Though that is rather more about how hard it is to sing in the depths of despair...

Cross post,notmuchjustaquantum! Smile

Hmm. I've been googling the Mat Redman song. 'Though I walk in the desert place, blessed be your name.' Can't track down the specific scripture though.

Doublegloucester · 08/05/2017 23:11

You've got it frisky, thank you.
I think I read it a while ago in Nadia Bolz Weber and wasn't sure how paraphrased it was -

'And so, evil be damned, because even as we go to the grave, we still make our song alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.'

My dad recently died and I've been thinking of that quote and having a little cry... It's so beautiful Smile

That is beautiful.

akkakk · 08/05/2017 23:33

pickle
is that based on psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

picklemepopcorn · 08/05/2017 23:37

I think it's a mixture of things. Job, chronicles, psalms...
That psalm you quoted reminds me of another modern song- that verse, followed by a chorus of 'oh no you never let go' 'I will fear no evil, for my God is with me, who then shall I fear?'

I really must read more psalms and sing fewer songs...
