I'm considering going on a course, but I'm keen to hear of others' experiences before I decide as it's quite pricey.

Thanks

my husband thinks that bloke wassisname - tony robbins? is one step above god. he's got that cd series he did. he's also got a big book. he thinks it's fab and claims he's got so much from it.

Mercy · 10/03/2007 21:01

Interesting you should mention that - i was having a little look the other day. Paul Mckenna has sort of teamed up with the originator of NLP.

Paul McKenna is fab but I know very little re NLP. What do you want to achieve from it?

stressteddy · 10/03/2007 21:03

Have some experience of NLP and I do like it. What do you want from it? For your own development? To help with situation? To achieve specific outcomes?

dogtired · 10/03/2007 21:14

I have a 20 month old son with cerebral palsy and I need to be the best person I can be for him and my husband. I have no energy and a latent depression. I'm ok, but not "living" as fully as I could. I could spend the rest of my life at this level, but it would be a shame.

If it works for me (should I go ahead and do it), I really love to help other parents in my situation.

What's the cd series called Mytwopenceworth? I'll see if I can get hold of it maybe?

Dogtired you already sound like you are being the best for him. NLP can help with so many different things. I would say worth taking a look at dvd or books and then decide if you want to invest in anymore stuff.

dogtired · 10/03/2007 21:22

Ok, I'll invest in a dvd series - Tony Robbins or Paul Mckenna??

I would say Tony Robbins but read up about both on net and see which takes yer fancy.
p.s on what you wrote before- please try not to think you need to have all the answers xx

thx st - it's a vicious circle - and one I know a lot of parents of children with disabilities are in - there's no end of therapies/play/education you can do with your child, but because your head's so battered by the grief/fear/organisation/isolation/form filling etc etc, you just don't have the energy or enthusiasm to actually do as much of it (or anything else for yourself, like socialise, enjoy your partner), as you would have had before you knew your child had problems.

From the snippets I've heard about NLP, it might be a really positive thing to try.

It can't do any harm to take a quick look can it? If you decide it's not for you (it isn't for everyone) then look elsewhere. Really feel for you in your situation. Must be terribly hard for all of you.

I liked unlimited power. He is inspirational but only one side of NLP to be honest. My therapist is a trained master practitioner amongst other techniques she uses NLP. It is great for some things but not all. I have wanted to do a course for a long time now but need some free weekends as all the good ones here are at the weekend which is hard for a single mum.

webcrone · 11/03/2007 16:48

Hi, I'm a trained Master Practitioner, amongst other things, and did my first training around 10 years ago. There are LOTS of books and audio/dvd products available and you can learn a fair bit from them BUT I'd recommend a live training or a one-to-one if you get the chance. There are plenty of UK-based trainers who do one-or two day introductory trainings, and it's worth checking out local adult ed provision as many do evening classes. If you're thinking of doing a full training then I'd advise finding something that guarantees small groups so that you get personal attention. I've trained with Paul McKenna/Richard Bandler (co-founder, biggest name in NLP) in London and it was 600+ people - although I had a great and very amped up time, I didn't learn much of any real use. Tony Robbins is good at the peak state, amped up stuff too, but is much more a motivational trainer than an NLP trainer these days (IMO).

Books I'd recommend for beginners - Frogs Into Princes or Using Your Brain for a Change (both by Richard Bandler) or Introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming by Joseph O'Conner and John Seymour.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in returning and thank you for the further replies.

GF - have you found the NLP bits of your therapy helpful in particular? Thanks for the tip on Unlimited Power, I'll check that out. How would I find out which are the "good" courses?

WC - Wow - you're a trained Master Practioner?! And such credentials! Thanks for the tip on small groups - that makes sense - but thinking further, one to one would probably be better for me. Was thinking about the 4 day June TR thing in London, but it's impossible really - hubby will be working away, I have no family support and there's only me that can feed my ds anyway. Thank you for the book recommendations.

The Derren Brown book has a chapter on it - quite debunking in some ways but certainly doesn't dismiss it entirely.

glitterfairy · 13/03/2007 20:06

There is an NLP training place near me called the Northern School and they are briliiant and regularly have wonderful speakers and people tlaking on their courses.Even if it is not near you they might help with some ideas.

I think NLP is really helpful and has helped me a lot but I like CBT as well and like a mix rather than staying with one approach to the exclusion of anything else.

mrsdarcy · 13/03/2007 20:27

Where are you based, Dogtired? I can recommend someone in the NW if that's any good to you.

dogtired · 14/03/2007 17:01

Lol mrsdarcy, I'm in the SW!

Need to get Googling I guess, I'll find the number for the Northern School and see if they can suggest somewhere down here.

Love Derren Brown!

Thanks!
