because i really don't know where else to put it!
I think i may be going mad. i keep hearing voices, and today was the final straw. For ages now i hear someone - a male voice - calling my name. To give an example of what it sounds like, i will be upstairs doing something and i will hear the voice call my name, from downstairs, or i the distance so i will come downstairs to ask DH why he called on me, or worse, realise i'm in the house myself. If Dh is in, he will say "I didn't call you". After this had been going on a while he asked my why i kept doing it, so i told him i could hear someone call me. Well today, i was at the PC, which is in the hall. DS1 was in living room, and i thought DS2 was upstairs. I heard, very plainly a child's voice say "whoo hoo", as though trying to get someones attention. i thought it was DS2, who has a bad habit of hanging out his bedroom window shouting at people, so i called him, no reply, i went halfway upstairs and called again no reply. Then he came out of the living room. He said he hadn't shouted anything, and TBH if he had in the living room, i wouldn't have heard it so clearly, and he would have been yelling, whereas this voice was calm.
I have just read over what i've written and you will agree with me, i am going mad. It's starting to bother me a bit, along with other unexplained things. I don't know who i can speak to about it though

absolutely no idea but sorry, that would completely freak me out!!!

saltire · 05/01/2007 17:42

It is freaking me out, and seriously starting to bother me. I did mention it to the doctor, who told me i wasn't schizophrenic(sp?) because the voices weren't telling me to anything!

You might not be going mad...I have a friend who swares blind almost exactly the same happens to her (and I can honestly say she isn't mad)
She has heard a boys voice (she has three DD)
Say "Boo Louise" (her name)
She hears her childrens toys make noises too when all the kids are out (although I keep telling her its probably a battery thing)
This male voice has called just her name several times too...

funkimummy · 05/01/2007 17:46

OK, so I don't class myself as the average balm-cake. Or you Saltire for that matter.

Don't know if you know much about mediumship. I'm not exactly the world's oracle on it, but I do know my Aunt and Uncle are both clairvoyant. That is to say, one of them hears things, and one see's things. (please don't think I'm nuts!)

Could be that you're picking up some 'vibes'?

Is your house old?

Carmenere · 05/01/2007 17:47

A few years ago I started to hear someone whistling occasionally(like a man whistling a tune but not quite). It would happen quite often and unexpectedly and it freaked me out a little but it went away. Tbh I never mentioned it to anyone because I was a bit embarrassed about hearing things but I think logically that as I have tinnitus(it was different to the tinnitus) and ear problems anyway it was probably something to do with that. Could it be something to do with your hearing?

ludaloo · 05/01/2007 17:49

She has also been in the house on her own and has ended up shouting down the stairs "What??" then she remembers she is on her own!

LadyTophamHatt · 05/01/2007 17:49

I get this too saltire.
I can be sitting next to Dh in the car and I'm sure he's said something to me.
I'll say pardon and he hasn't said a word.

IMO, it all to do with being at home everyday. My ears are totally shot because of the constant noise I've had for the last 8 years. I hear a noise and it's translated into a word in my noise riddled head.

strawberry · 05/01/2007 17:49

It is common to hear voices and not have a mental illness. Check out the hearing voices network website. Anthony Hopkins and Zoe Wannamaker (to name two) also hear voices but have learnt coping strategies.

saltire · 05/01/2007 17:54

The house isn't old. I don't know what was here before hand. We did have the flashing lights incident, which both DH and i witnessed. One night we were sitting on the sofa, which is a right angles to the window. We both saw a white light, about 15 cms in length float across the room, from the window until it disappeared halfway over. The following night, we were sitting ont eh sofa again, watchign a dvd when the lgiht appeared again, this time in front of the TV, same light, size etc. It hovvered in front of TV for a few seconds then disappeared.

strawberry i checked out that website. It has good advice but it seems to be mainly for people who hear voices all the time. I don't just now and again.

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!

Something a bit odd going on there then isn't it. Keep me posted.

Perhaps go and see a good clairvoyant or medium in you area - they might be able to help?!?!?!?!

saltire · 05/01/2007 18:08

The thing is funkimummy, if a medium/clairvoyant told me they were talking to my dad and started telling me things about him, i'd be out there like a shot!

Well........um........they don't necessarily come out with things like that.

I only know thru my Aunt. She gets some stuff, but not necessarily everything about you, and she is spot on.

First she knew of having a gift, she went to her friends house. Whilst walking up garden path she sees an old lady sitting on a bench in the front garden. Lady says, 'are you looking for Jean?' My aunt says 'yes' so old lady says 'go on in, she's upstairs.'

My Aunt asks Jean who old lady is. Jean looks out of window and says 'what old lady?' My Aunt describes her (even down to what she smelled like.) and colour drained from Jeans face. 'oh my god' she says. 'thats my Nan. She's been dead 3 years!

DominiConnor · 05/01/2007 18:18

DS described Daleks long before he'd actually seen one.
Kids make stuff up, you can interpret it as coincidence or the reincarnation of Jon Pertwee.

funkimummy · 05/01/2007 18:21

What. Worzel Gummidge is back?!?!?!

funkimummy · 05/01/2007 18:22

He did play WG, right?

saltire · 05/01/2007 18:36

Daleks?
Worzel Gummidge?
I'm definately going mad

Ah funny, funny.

Overrun · 05/01/2007 18:46

Saltire, it is really unlikely that you are experiencing any form of psychosis, you are probably past the age of most risk of developing a psychotic illness. Minds can play tricks on you when you are stresed or tired.
Can I just say however that your Dr is incorrect when he says it can't be schizophrenia because the voices are not telling you to do something.
Auditory hallucinations are more common than we think, as the site that was recommended would suggest. Not all schizophrenics have command hallucinations though. But when they do, depeding on whether the voices are nasty or kind, and what they are telling them to do, thats how you begin to assess some ones illness.
Hope that makes sense, typed in a hurry.

A friend of mine sees flashing lights round people sometimes and auras. He's also heard voices speaking to him. He went to the loo one night, after a night out, and he heard someone say "have you had a good night" - he answered "yes" as though it was normal - freaked him slightly. He and his wife have also seen lights/orbs in their house - they have a lot of funny going on's. He's just learned to live with it, he's also started to meditate.

ditzyangeluk · 06/01/2007 00:03

It's all a matter of personal belief & perception.
My nephew has learning difficulties so he has a very simplistic & straight-forward view & way of life. Anyway, he 'talks' to his nan every night (she died 5 years ago). He sees auras & 'taks' to loved ones all the time. It's natural & normal to him - & we accept it.
saltire: I didn't for a minute think you were mad, in fact it all sounds very familiar! I'd go with funkimummy ... I think you are picking up some vibes, maybe even your dad trying to contact you? (Sorry, don't mean to freak you out but if your loved ones want to get through to you, they'll try anything & don't worry about you freaking over it!!) They start off subtle, little signs or smells, then they do the "woohoo" type thing!!
(My friend hasa 'gift' but I am all over the place & although greatly believe in it, can't pick up anything. The other day I heard a LOUD whisper of my name. Told my friend & she said yes, I had heard it!!)
As funkimummy suggested, maybe you could go & see a good clairvoyant or medium in you area, if only to put your mind at rest? A less personal way could be to go along to a Spiritualist Church (believe me, you don't have to be religious!) If there is someone tring to contact you, it would be a good way to get through.
Just a thought .. but please, don't stress or think you are going mad.

kittylette · 06/01/2007 00:06

i hear people calling my name when i hoover, or dry my hair,

i believe in spirits, maybe its the ;white noise' that allows them to contact you more easily at that point?

thats what i believe i hear

BadHair · 06/01/2007 00:12

I keep hearing the doorbell ring when there's no-one there and no-one else has heard it. OK so it's not voices, but I know how you feel.

sandcastles · 06/01/2007 00:22

Sounds to me like someone is trying to get your attention.....

funkimummy · 06/01/2007 00:58

ditzyangel and anyone who's posted after that - THANKYOU! thought I was going mad! Or just had mad family!!! I've grown up with it, so to me, it's been normal for someone to come out with odd things that turn out to be right - like - 'you were in your kitchen the other day, wondering what it would be like if your Nan could see you with your children. She can, and she says the crystal item you broke on Wednesday can be fixed, and where's the red dress? Long story - but spot on, and I see my aunt (or great aunt really) once a year if I'm lucky!!!
