What is rooibos????? If it cures hangovers I want some too. Hello everyone I have missed you but am off again on Tuesday to Dublin. We have internet access there though so hurrah for that.

AM off to the tanning booth so that I dont look ridiculous. Happy litha paps

papillon · 26/06/2004 12:06

Morning

Melsy darling... the sea spa is not for colonic irrigation!!!!
LOL

Glitter our moonlighter, we miss you too - and really hope things went well for you last week. Have fun in Dublin... are you managing to dry out for afew days before hitting the Guiness??

just a wee bit of info about Rooibos (don´t see any direct connection to hangover... but it does make you abit thirsty.. so perhaps it encourages you also to take more fluid?)

Rooibos (Red Bush) tea is unique to South Africa. It is a soothing tea, unique in flavour and red in color. The healing effects of Rooibos tea, particularly for babies, are legendary in South Africa. Much of this is local folklore but substantial research conducted in South Africa and Japan has shown that Rooibos does indeed have health promoting properties that include the following:

Caffeine free
Low in tannin (less than 10% of normal tea)
Rich in anti-oxidants (contains a mimic of the enzyme Super Oxide Dismutase / S.O.D.)
Low in harmful alkaloids
Low Kilojoules

The plant (Red Bush)---Aspalathus linearis is a leguminious shrub indigenous to the Cedarberg Mountains around Clanwilliam near Cape Town in South Africa. It was the locals of the area who first discovered that the fine, needle-like leaves of the Rooibos (Red Bush) plant made a tasty, aromatic tea and red in color (Rooibos tea). In 1904, Benjamin Ginsberg, a Russian immigrant and pioneer in the area, became interested in Rooibos and realized its marketing potential. He started trading it from the people of the mountains and selling it. By 1930, a certain Dr. P. le Fras Nortier, a well known medical doctor and nature lover, had discovered the value of Rooibos as an agricultural product. Due to his and some of his friends' enthusiasm, other farmers became interested in the cultivation of Rooibos and soon production started. Medical science is only beginning to discover the many healthy advantages of Rooibos. Ongoing research and case studies confirm that there seems to be no end to its benefits. It has been found that...

Rooibos is completely pure and natural as it contains no additives, preservatives or colorants.
It is a unique beverage with a characteristic sweet flavour and is rich in volatile compounds, minerals and vitamin C, is caffeine free, and has a low tannin content.
Rooibos also supplements the daily amounts of calcium, manganese and especially fluoride, needed for the development of strong teeth and bones.
Clinically, Rooibos tea is often prescribed against nervous tension, allergies and various stomach and digestive problems.
Rooibos contains zinc and alpha hydroxy acid which promote a healthy skin and magnesium which is necessary for a healthy nervous system.
Rooibos also contains iron, as well as potassium and copper-minerals which are essential for several metabolic functions.
Rooibos is a soothing drink for people on a kilojoule restricted diet, without adding kilojoules.
Since Rooibos contains no oxalic acid it can be drunk freely by people suffering from kidney-stones.
Mothers find Rooibos to be of benefit in combating common infant ailments like colic and stomach cramps. It also helps with nappy rash, relieving irritation when applied with every nappy change.
In this era of health-conscious consumers, Rooibos is a product tailor made for today's lifestyle. A hot, soothing cup of Rooibos is completely pure and natural, containing no additives, preservatives or colorants of any kind. Preparing the perfect cup of Rooibos is really quite easy. It can be made much like ordinary tea, in an ordinary teapot.

Hot Rooibos Tea is delicious with hot or cold milk, with lemon, or simply on its own. If desired, Rooibos can be sweetened with sugar or honey, but will need less sweetener than ordinary tea since it's less astringent and less bitter. Another advantage is that Rooibos can reheated with no loss of flavour.
Rooibos tea can be enjoyed as an iced tea or fruit juice blend.
It can be used in cooking and baking as a substitute for water increasing nutritional value.

A typical breakdown of 1 cup (200ml) is as follows:

Calcium(Ca): 0.54mg.
Copper(Cu): 0.035mg.
Fluoride(F): 0.11mg.
Iron(Fe): 0.035mg.
Magnesium(Mg): 0.78mg.
Manganese(Mn): 0.02mg.
Potassium(K): 3.56mg.
Sodium(Na): 3.08mg.
Zinc(Zn): 0.02mg.

I haven't checked out this thread before, kept meaning to, and here you all are drinking my favourite redbush (just made myself a cup). Had a horrendous night last night with dd up with her teeth and an upset tummy, which I discovered she had given to ds when he came storming in at 5.30am needing the toilet. Dd slept with her head on my shoulder from 4am to 6.30am and now I need some gentle holistic massage to release the spasm. Can I rest under a tree here for a while?

papillon · 26/06/2004 12:28

Hi Wilbur

You are most welcome to rest here whenever you like. I have a tree where I sleep and it has a thistledown mattress which ensures the sweetest most relaxing sleep.

Today I go for a ride on my donkey, Esmeralda. Perhaps after that I might see you and others at the sea spa which we are totally addicted too!

glitterfairy · 26/06/2004 17:32

Hiya paps

You are the fount of all knowledge. I know what redbush is but didnt know the other name.

Have you had a lovely time in the sun. Didnt get out for lunch as we are too busy sorting stuff for Dublin and after London.

Am imagining a summer picnic on the deck with sibble and melsy and anyone else who wants to come. Maybe a fire and fireworks later.

papillon · 26/06/2004 17:51

Hi Glitter, a picnic on the deck sounds lovely.

Just back from our outdoor excursion. Bought some dried Mango for dd which she LOVES. She is currently singing lullabies to her pussy cat before slipping into dream land.

Nature was a tad shortlived as we had to dash into town (slipped into a travel agent to see about a certain summer party flight arrangements)

After the fireworks, perhaps you and anybody else who would like to join me, could come to the forest. There is a ring of trees with flowers, herbs and chimes hanging from the branches. In the centre are thistledown chairs to sit upon and a fire to gaze upon for enlightened conversation and blessings to the solstice.

glitterfairy · 26/06/2004 19:43

Would love to that will set me up for my trip to Dublin tomorrow

melsy · 26/06/2004 20:44

Hope your all having a great day of Litha. Is that right paps??

Will have to look into the rooibois tea may make a nice alternative to give dd for her allergys.Funny that I didnt hear of it when I went ot SA.

Thank you for the lunch on the deck most delicious glitter. hope your packing is going well. Dublin is your second home these days. Glad you can relax or refresh in here.

Looking forward to fireworks and fire in the circle of magnificent trees for the evening. shall we bring some blankets from the house too ??

Melsy tired darling ... here is a thistledown mattress so that you lie down next the fire and can snooze and join in whenever you like

Here is a gold candle and glass of elderflower champagne for you to sup on - golden light and drinks tonite!

ZolaPola · 26/06/2004 23:15

taking shelter in here from the storm outside - lovely to see you all on this longest day!
no longer drinking rooibos but already on wine (It's been one of those days...)
thistledown mattress & golden lights and champagne sounds magical - enjoy! I'll pop back later if I can, off to have dinner now.
A happy summer solstice to you all!

blushc · 26/06/2004 23:21

Can smell dinner cooking on the virtual fire. Think I'll snuggle up in a blanket and enjoy the fresh breeze on my face whilst gazing at the sky. Thanks for the warm welcome

papillon · 26/06/2004 23:23

Hi Blushc and ZolaPola, lovely to see you here tonite

A golden candle and elderflower champagne for you both!
Some food on the fire sounds good - I will bake some sweetcorn in the embers and have made a tomato salsa to have with it.

sibble · 26/06/2004 23:25

oooh count me in, fireworks are my absolute favourite things. Lying back on a warm blanket under teh clear summer sky, picking out stars then watching fireworks (brings back memories of kenwood in RL - usually minus the clear starry sky though!!) sipping bubbly. DS loves them too and is happy to lie on teh blanket with me. I may have to dip in the spa afterwards, spas by moonlight are great and then why go home? may just bed down for the night ready to rise early to watch the sun rise, a yoga class, massage and walk through the woods before breakfast on teh deck.....DS will sleep in with the other kiddies staying overnight and I will have morning to myself. My hardest decision will be what to have from the breakfast platter.
Yep, count me in

papillon · 26/06/2004 23:30

Hi Sibble, a golden candle for you and a glass of elderflower champagne

Hope you are well... yes a midnight soak in the spa sounds like a fine idea

DelGirl · 26/06/2004 23:32

Hello, can I joint in with the um, celebrations?

DelGirl · 26/06/2004 23:33

I meant JOIN of course

sibble · 26/06/2004 23:34

Hi Paps thanks for that, champagne is going down very well. I've thrown some veggies on teh barbie with rosemary, garlic and tortilla wraps, can I borrow some of your salsa?

papillon · 26/06/2004 23:34

Hello DelGirl and welcome

Here is a gold candle and glass of elderflower champagne for you.
Come pull up a thistledown chair and settle in next the fire with us. Fireworks later... if glitter arrives to light em up!

papillon · 26/06/2004 23:37

Yum the tortilla wraps sound fab!

The stars are lovely tonite! Just burning some sage on the fire to cleanse the area.. and I think DelGirl is burning a joint to relax all the spirits lurking

I also placed garlic around the edges of the trees for protection.. next year they will grow and we can bake magical garlic on the fire!

DelGirl · 26/06/2004 23:38

Ooh, lovely! Thank you .

DelGirl · 26/06/2004 23:39
