I would like to share some humanist books with DS6. Any recommendations?

Your post has made me realise that there is a dearth of such books BelleCurve!

This is all I could come up with:

The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen – freely available on-line. All about being a free thinker and not succumbing to group think. Trusting your own observations over popular opinion – even when endorsed by someone in a position of power/authority.

When your DS is a little older there are the His Dark Materials books by Philip Pullman. There is a strong anti-Church authority sentiment in these books. I have to admit I have only read the first and only quite liked it. The books definitely overshoot from atheism into antitheism territory.

Finally, Richard Dawkins has written a book for older children (though some sections could be read by an adult to younger children) called the Magic of Reality. I have had a look at it on Amazon as I am planning to buy it for my DS who is in the intended age range. It is mainly a beautifully illustrated science book but, yes, the theme of atheism surfaces. (Not a surprise really with Richard Dawkins as the author!) Again the atheism overshoots slightly but not too stridently into antitheism territory – so you would have to be prepared for that.

Thanks. DS loves The Emperor's New Clothes. I would like to try to steer away from antitheism if I can, as DS's Dad has a strong Muslim heritage.

I am trying to find something to counteract the "Baby Jesus" stories from school, to understand that not everyone has a religion but they can still be a good person.

I've found this which might be a little old for him, but I could save it for a couple of years.
