my 6yr old has just asked me to give her heart to someone else WHEN! she dies.
about 2 new years' eves ago, she asked me if a "white cross would float down the river when I die"...This really upsets me but I just try to put things into perspective as I know children do ask questions like this now and again...she was reading the Bible at the time...!

Dont freak out... she must have just seen an ad for organ donation or something. Kids do say the oddest things at that age - I remember asking for a white coffin when I died to my mum!

I would just take it with a pinch of salt - children do get very melodramatic and imaginative around death I think. As long as it doesn't seem to be troubling her I wouldn't worry.

My 3yo (he's 4 now) told me once, quite calmly, that before he was born out of Mummy's tunny he was a man called John Cotton who built houses. I asked him what the last thing he remembered about being John Cotton was, and he said he fell off a ladder and everything went dark . I took it with a very large pinch of salt, because I really don't believe in reincarnation at all. But it was very interesting

tummy, not tunny (note to self - put your bloody glasses on)

could've been a tunny....

It's Aussie slang for flappy fanjo!

cutekids · 07/11/2006 21:00

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 21:10

improvingslowly · 07/11/2006 21:14

my 6 yr old daughter asked if when i died she could have the house and my money so that she could live in the house with her brother. should i be worried????!!

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 21:14

not unless she's doing the cooking!

Greensleeves · 07/11/2006 21:16

No, I didn't google it or follow it up - it slipped my mind. Why????

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 21:18

must be very interested. She's obviously deeply engrossed in it! VVV!!!!!!!

There are quite a few "famous" john Cottons

It is quite easy to look up death cert records. Most of the john cottons I found didnt say what he did for a living, or, were fishermen.

DD1 used to say that she was Arthur Wildhouse (was there a kids tv character called that?) and her dad was called Daniel etc, etc. She would talk at length about her old family. I found it amazing to listen to.
My kids talk quite openly about death and what they want to happen after they die. I have explained that if everthing goes to plan I will not be here to carry out their wishes. DD1s Daddy died when she was 20 months old, so she's grown up with a great understanding of death and living with loss. She was amazing when my Dad died. She was his biggest fan and I was sure she'd be totally devastated (she was 9) but she was so well informed due to her early loss that she was content to know that Grandad would be in Heaven with her DD and all would be well.
If your kids know about death they wont be frightened if and when they have to deal with it.
It's a toughie but I think even if they experience the death of a pet it can help to explain the process of life and death.
