Roman Catholic wedding ceremony

Just wondered if anyone can give me any insight into what is the norm in a Catholic wedding ceremony. In terms of Order of Service, hymns etc.

DP and I are from different denominations and a lot of the hymns I have suggested to him he is not familiar with. The marriage ceremony will be in my church with my minister ordaining and she is happy for us to incorporate parts of Catholic ceremony as well so I'd just like to know more about it.

It's pretty similar really in terms of order of service, as you won't be having a mass. We had readings (one OT, one NT), a sermon from the priest, vows (no obeying for Catholics), blessing.

What hymns did you suggest? My DH and I found it pretty straightforward to find hymns we both knew. He is CofE and I am RCN.

RC!

Same as Fallen, but we had a responsorial psalm as well.

Our hymns were Morning Has Broekn, Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven and one about Our Lady which probably wouldn't be appropriate unless you had an RC service. DH isn't Catholic.

Thank you for replies.

I don't know wether it's just DP being a bit clueless with regards to hymns - we have chosen readings together but he will freely admit he doesn't really care about the order of service, he says the vows are the important bit.

Hymns I love are 'Make me a channel of your peace', 'as the deer pants for the water', and 'the lords my shepherd' the modern Stuart Townsend melody.

About 3/4's of guests will be RC - I want everyone to feel comfortable and involved really and want it to be meaningful for DP as well.

I am starting to think he is on the wind up to get out of helping!!

Our first hymn (RC service) was Be still for the presence of the Lord. Can't remember any others at the moment but it may come back to me! We had The Prayer too while signing the register.

DontWorryBaby - I have literally just texted DP and said "what about 'Be still for the presence of the Lord'!?" and then came on and saw your post! Smile

We had Make Me a Channel of your Peace, and The Lord's My Shepherd is surely a hymn all Catholics know! Is he practising?

MsVanRein · 28/02/2015 17:15

Oh that's good TheFallenMadonna - I really do think he is on the wind up now! I genuinely couldn't understand why everything I mentioned he just didn't seem to have a clue!

No longer practicing - but was up until not long ago. Half his family are very devout and I think I get blamed a little bit behind closed doors that he isn't practicing (not by DP, but by his family!)

Be Still is very appropriate for the start of the service. Hope your soon-to-be DH approves!

I think services will generally be quite similar and those hymns familiar. Will you have an order of service with details of when to stand up sit down etc as these tend to be different and can make people feel awkward of they aren't sure what to do.

If you really want to make the Catholics feel at home perhaps choir singing Ave Maria or other traditional Catholic hynn if priest feels appropriate? Or openly acknowledging there are different denominations there and encouraging them to participate in the way they feel comfortable?

ginger yes we will have a printed order of service, but also I know my ministers general style and she will ask people to stand or please be seated as well.

Minister is lovely and very ecumenical in her approach which is good.

We have option to have a priest there too to lead some parts of the service.
