interfaith relations/sharing thread

Given the atmosphere on some sections of Mnet, and the lovely time we had on the Shana Tova thread, I was wondering if anyone was up for an interfaith sharing thread?

OP posts:
lulumama · 17/10/2006 23:34

was that a genereal question?

i pointed out my lurking as posted a little initially and added my support to the thread when it started...but not posted a huge amount and didn't want nearlythree to think i am no longer interested after she had set it up.....

especially as set up in response to some of the more horrible goings on...so ordinarily i would post or not bother..but here i feel i want to show my support even if not posting....

evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 17/10/2006 23:34

No Samhainwitch I wasn't, only the threads I have posted on that had nothing to do with it that has still got people referring to it, if you see what I mean. I am deliberately avoiding it (as I know others are) but finding it popping up in other places.

Sorry to offend.

nearlythree · 17/10/2006 23:43

evilannie, I know what you mean, I have a 4 mo ds as well as two dds and have anxiety problems following them being ill. But there will be some here who are posting on those threads and I did want to show St.G that I supported the stance she was taking, one I agree with but don't feel up to making.

Anyway, congrats on the pg, how far are you?

Thanks for the support, lulumama,

One thing I do hope for this thread i sthat we can all listen to each others' beliefs with respect, which so far we all seem to be doing!

OP posts:
evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 17/10/2006 23:45

I think I will just slope off for a bit, I find it, and any reference to it, upsetting at the moment, which is my problem for feeling vulnerable at the mo. I am finding this thread very interesting, and look forward to reading more. PS I am 18 weks, also have 3 dds.

lulumama · 17/10/2006 23:46

you are welcome...sleep time for me ..so good night...sleep well all...

SANA · 18/10/2006 10:01

hello all, I am Muslim and its so nice to see this kind of thread where u can share beliefs without being attacked or always being on the defensive ( I put my hands up, thats how I feel these days )I think we should live & let live........wouldnt the world just be a much nicer place!!!

Flamebat · 18/10/2006 16:28

Hiya everyone - caught up, but no brain power to reply yet.

Sana - I know very very little about the muslim faith, and am very interested to know more.

Evilannie - No idea what all that is about, just saying that I'm not planning on being mean to anyone...

nearlythree · 18/10/2006 21:57

Hi, Sana, great to have you here! I am so that you feel you have to be so defensive about who you are right now, there is some shocking stuff going on both in RL and on Mnet. As a Christian I often feel ignored, derided or patronised but I've never felt threatened.

Evilannie, how old are your dds? Ours are 4 and 2, with ds nearly 5 mo. How are you feeling?

OP posts:
lulumama · 19/10/2006 13:44

hi ..just checking in.....babylulu a bit poorly. so my brain is fading a little . welcome sana -sorry you feel i am glad there is a place here we can all 'live and let live' as you say

look forward to hearing more from everyone....

nearlythree · 19/10/2006 21:53

hi,lulumama, sorry to hear about babaylulu. So stressful when they are poorly, isn't it? Hope she is better soon xxx

SANA · 20/10/2006 12:14

Thank you for the welcome!!! I have been so busy, we r just coming to the end of ramadan ( the month of fasting) & getting ready to celebrate Eid which will be this coming Sunday or Monday ( depending on the sighting of the moon). we celebarte the day by visiting family & eating lots of lovely food. All the kids get Eidi ( money) or presents & we offer a special prayer to god on that day.

I know we all have diff beliefs & to me Islam teaches tolerance of all religions. I would love to see articles or stuff on the news about the billions of muslims who live in peace but i suppose that will bever happen, but I pray for better times. Wishing u all well

lulumama · 20/10/2006 20:16

Hi Sana - sadly, the many many peace loving & tolerant muslims do not sell newspapers...

nearlythree...babylulu has a virus i think..still not right..so am keeping a close eye.....

lulumama · 20/10/2006 20:18

flamebat

is one born a 'witch' or can you learn to be one?

and can you nurture any psychic abilities and grow them as it were?

do you have to believe in ghosts/spirits etc..to be a witch?

sorry if you prefer a different term to witch....

T

lulumama · 20/10/2006 20:19

thanks!

ChildrenOftheCornMeadow · 20/10/2006 20:36

hi to everyone! Ive been directed here by Flame and have been lurking for a few days, so thought Id introduce myself. Brought up Church of Ireland (anglican) and when teenager/early twenties quite into the whole thing, especially being involved in ecumenical activities (prods and caths worshipping together) which is/was quite radical in N Ireland.

Now, dont really know what I believe except that I dont believe in "one way". I believe there are many paths to god/spiritual awareness/goddess and all of them are right for the individuals who walk them.

Am v interested in paganism/wicca,etc with its connection to the earth and teh natural rhythms of life.

Question: what does everyone think happens after death?

(sorry if being v forward in new thread)

lulumama · 20/10/2006 21:08

HI

i beleive in something,...some sort of 'heaven' where we will be reunited with our loved ones...and i always imagine it as eveyone being whole and corporeal rather than a spirt..for some reason....

nearlythree · 20/10/2006 21:24

Hi, ChildrenoftheCorn (how would you like that abbreviated???)

I am a Christian but like you have gone from being very involved (at one time I considered the priesthood) to being on the fringes. I too am drawn to some of the aspects of paganism esp. in relation to its respect for the natural cycle of things but at the end of the day Christian is what I am and I can't change that. I suppose the church I feel closest to atm is the Unitarians, but even they don't feel quite right, so I'm on a bit of a lonely journey! You might like to check them out btw - they include liberal Christians, Jews, Bhuddists, and pagans.

I have absolutely no idea what happens after we die and I personally don't find it helpful to speculate. I live in the hope of an afterlife; I don't think any of us can say more than that. If there is an afterlife I believe in a just and merciful God, so therefore I believe the afterlife to be a place of peace and safety. That's the best I can offer right now; wish I did believe absolutely in Heaven like I used to!

Sana - I am so sorry for the way you are being made to feel atm. I agree with lulumama, right now it is what sells papers (and maybe wins votes ).

Lulumama, hope babylulu gets well soon, will be remembering you both in my prayers.

OP posts:
lulumama · 20/10/2006 21:29

nearly3...i would like to thank you for remembering babylulu in your prayers...it is a very kind thing to do and it has really moved me...sincerly

thank you

SamhainWitch · 20/10/2006 21:38

"Is one born a 'witch' or can you learn to be one?"

Can be both. I come from a line of women who have followed pagan paths, and have had natural abilities with herbs etc so I think of myself as a born witch (which is a perfectly suitable term by the way). However, you can learn to follow a pagan lifestyle and how to work with energies without any prior knowledge and therefore 'become' a witch.

"Can you nurture any psychic abilities and grow them as it were?"

Yes. The younger you start to do this the easier it is but it is possible at any age. Some people are more naturally inclined than others but I believe everyone has it in them if they search deeply enough.

Do you have to believe in ghosts/spirits etc..to be a witch?

No, but it helps

"Question: what does everyone think happens after death?"

Our souls move on to another plane of existence. I have no particular name for this place, but I know it is there.

lulumama · 20/10/2006 21:39

thanks SW...much appreciated!

ChildrenOftheCornMeadow · 20/10/2006 21:41

my real MN name is dewmeadow (the other is my Hallowe'en name) so a short name would be dew.

I also wish I believed in Heaven without question.

Wouldnt call myself a Christian at all
Must go - baby

nearlythree · 20/10/2006 21:51

lulumama, don't thank me...prayer, you know, it's what we're about really... Hope you get a good night.xxx

OP posts:
nearlythree · 20/10/2006 21:54

dew, sorry, I did get the impression you didn't consider yourself to be a Christian any more but I can see how I gave the impression that I did. I've found changing my beliefs very painful, I hope it's been easier for you.

OP posts:
SamhainWitch · 20/10/2006 21:58

Have you looked at Celtic Christianity nearlythree?

nearlythree · 20/10/2006 22:03

Hi, StG, thank you so much, yes I have, in fact I've just been posting to Harrisey about it on another thread. I love it and it really speaks to me, although I haven't used my books for a while. The big problem is that I'd still be going it alone, as it were - none of our local churches practise it. I really feel the need to belong to a community.

Maybe you and harrisey are onto something though - perhaps I should go back to my books and use them again.
