If Derren Brown isn't psychic, what is he then?

Amazed at what he did on his Infamous programme the other night. But, how can you read that kind of information from someone's body language? It wasn't any old random crap but quite specific.

I'm confused!

madamemuddle, I am good with time too. To the minute. Never wear a watch. I find it all quite frustrating tbh as I can't switch off from assessing things around me.

I am exactly like modern incarnations of Sherlock Holmes, yes. Socially inept, uncomfortable with convention, vaguely irritating and always wear a scarf.

no-one is psychic or the prize for proving it would have been claimed long ago.

all the above phenomena are due to basic science or good old coincidence.

Huh, I was going to write something important here but my phone froze and crashed the page. So I'm going to take that as a sign given what I was writing that perhaps some things should just not be added to.

I think he's just highly, highly intuitive, with a good grounding in human psychology and a finely-tuned understanding of what motivates people.

There's clearly no supernatural element to it - and he's said so much himself - but our brains are capable of a whole lot more than we often realise, and he's tapping into that. People like patterns, and unconsciously seek them out, and I think Derren somehow understands the patterns people are looking for and either panders to their expectations or subverts them, if that makes sense.

I'm by no means psychic, and am certainly not capable of any feats on Derren Brown's level, but I do think I'm unusually observant and sensitive to things. I've only recently come to understand this (partly by reading a great book called The Highly Sensitive Person), and it's been a bit of a mixed blessing - social situations, such as parties, can be overwhelming, as I'm processing so much information at once and always flitting between different things. My best friend - who in many ways is my polar opposite - will walk into a party, spot one person she recognises and become engrossed in a conversation. I, on the other hand, will pick up on all the different discussions, notice from their body language that the couple in the corner have had a row, identify the smell from the vase of flowers on the table, notice when the background music changes, or the noise in the room picks up/there's a lull, spot the person who is quietly sneaking outside to smoke and so on. I think Derren Brown is doing a similar thing on a very magnified level.

I wonder if he's ever had any problems with anxiety. That amount of information input must be overwhelming at times.

Showy in fact, I sound a bit like you! I'm OK socially now, but was terribly shy as a child/young adult, and have had to teach myself social skills by watching others from the sidelines. You do get good at analysing people's body language, clothing, speech patterns and little interactions after a while.

DP and I always play 'Guess the Nationality' with groups of tourists on holiday. Some (British, German, American, Japanese) stand out a mile, but we're even pretty good at the more subtle differences e.g. Danish vs Swedish or Spanish vs Italian. You just have to pay attention!
