Help with children's sung prayers please.

At our pre-school, we are looking for some little sung prayers to teach the children.
We've got Johnny Appleseed "The Lord is good to me and so I thank the Lord, for giving me the things I need, the sun the rain and the appleseed, the Lord is good to me"
When I was at school we did one that went something like, "something...thank you for the world so sweet... thank you for the birds that sing, thank you God for everything."
Can anyone fill in the blanks or recommend any others.
Many thanks!

Isn't it "thank you for the world so sweet, thank you for the food we eat"?

We do one at our church toddler group at the end:
"Goodbye, goodbye, to you and you and you.
Good bye, goodbye, may God take care of you"

I don't have time to post all the words tonight, I'm afraid, and I certainly couldn't give you the tunes, but I would suggest that you look around for books for Brownies and Guides (and probably the Cubs/Scouts too) about Graces. Graces are simple songs usually sung before meals but a lot of them have more general thanks themes too - Johnny Appleseed is one such grace. One of my favourites is: God has created a new day, Silver and green and gold. Live that the sunset may find us, Worthy HIs gifts to hold. But I can't 'sing' it to you online! Another one that is always a favourite is Allelu, because it can be a round, with one team singing the @allelu' bits and the other the Praise Be bits - everyone starts sitting down, then they stand as they sing, and it all gets bobbing about - lots of fun!
Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia
Praise Be the Lord!
Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia
Praise Be the Lord!
Praise Be the Lord! Alleluia!
Praise Be the Lord! Alleluia!
Praise Be the Lord! Alleluia!
Praise Be the Lord!
It is better than it sounds...
Perhaps someone will recognise them and be able to give you a more well-known name to the tunes...

We used to sing the one you mention - as far as I remember the words are

Thank you for the world so sweet
Thank you for the food we eat
Thank you for the birds that sing
Thank you God for everything

Katymac · 20/09/2006 21:49

Like Kum by Yar?
He's got the whole world in his hands?

God be in my (I cn't remember that)

Posey · 20/09/2006 21:57

Tommy and WWB - yes! ..food we eat is the missing line, obvious really! Thanks.
Thanks for the other suggestions. My sister is a Brown Owl, I think I'll send her an email!

I have a friend who is a children's pastor - I'll ask her when I talk to her next - probably tomorrow actually!

SSSandy · 20/09/2006 22:13

The good thing about kum by yar is you can remember the words!

MrsBadger · 20/09/2006 22:22

When I was little we used to sing the last verse of Away in a Manger:
Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay
close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care
And fit us for Heaven, to live with thee there.

some more ideas here

Glad that I live am I
That the sky is blue
Glad for the country lanes
And the fall of dew.
After the sun the rain, after the rain the sun...
This is the way of life
Since the world began.

Used to sing this at primary school - years ago but I have never forgotten it!

saadia · 20/09/2006 22:30

I'm not sure if it's appropriate (because I can't remember most of the lyrics) but we used to sing Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" at primary school (had a really hippy music teacher).

harrisey · 21/09/2006 00:20

If it is a grace you are looking for, we did this one to the tune of 'rock around the clock' (!!!)

God is great, God is good,
And we thank Him for our food,
We're gonna thank the Lord with all our might
We're gonna thank Him morning, noon and night,
Amen amen amen amen amen.

Xavielli · 21/09/2006 00:41

This looks good

Xavielli · 21/09/2006 00:47

My little girl loves this one:

If I were a butterfly
I?d thank you Lord for giving me wings
If I were a robin in a tree
I?d thank you Lord that I could sing
If I were a fish in the sea
I?d wiggle my tail and I?d giggle with glee
But I just thank you Father for making me, me

CHORUS
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me

If I were an elephant
I?d thank you Lord by raising my trunk
If I were a kangaroo
You know I?d hop right up to you
If I were an octopus
I?d thank you Lord for my fine looks
But I just thank you Father for making me, me

CHORUS
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me

If I were a wiggly worm
I?d thank you Lord that I could squirm
If I were a fuzzy, wuzzy bear
I?d thank you Lord for my fuzzy, wuzzy hair
If I were a crocodile
I?d thank you Lord for my great smile
But I just thank you Father for
making me, me

CHORUS
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me
And I just thank you Father for making me, me

How bout this to the Superman theme tune!!

Thank you Lord for giving us food
Thank you Lord for giving us food
For giving us Bre-ad
When we need to be fe-d
Thank you Lord!

This must be sung whilst swaying, with right arm aloft in Superman flying pose.

bobsmum · 21/09/2006 19:20

Harrisey's rock around the clock one is a personal fave though

Posey · 21/09/2006 20:42

These are fantastic
I said to my supervisor at work "oh I've got one or 2 friends who'll be able to help me with finding some suitable songs" and lo! here we are.
Thank you all so much.

Donnie - i used to love that at school, had completely forgotten it but the tune came straight to me. Must've learnt it well over 30 years ago.
