The Gaza Conflict - what do Jews and Christians say?

I will apologise first and foremost for my utter ignorance on all matters political. I haven't read around this conflict nearly enough and I am never sure what is propaganda and what is truth (but I guess that's always the case with wars - or anything, really). My mum is a Christian and keeps referring to the Old Testament prophets who were told by God that none would defeat His people and that Israel's enemies would be trodden underfoot (apologies for my watered-down version). With this in mind, how do Christians and Jews approach the conflict in discussions? What do they think about the reporting of the conflict in terms of truth/propaganda? Who is right in all of this?

I'm not sure if I'm making sense Sad I just want to be more informed about what is going on and what the beliefs are (in terms of this war) of those who count themselves as God's people. Thank you.

Well, I'm not well up on Judaism, but there have been an awful lot of posts showing orthodox jews condemning the State of Israel.

AFIK, (apart from genuine human empathy) they say that the Jews had their homeland taken from them as a punishment by God and not supposed to recreate it.

All of Palestinians are Christians, descended from some of the earliest Christians so it would be a poor show for Christians (apart from genuine human empathy) to be in favor of this genocide, however there are a lot of Christian Zionists out there.

The State of Israel has nothing to do with the Ancient land of Israel. It was found in 1948 by the invasion and the expropiation of land from the inhabitants, the Palestinians. It's philosophy is Zionism, an idea that took shape in the 19th Century in the mind of a Jewish Atheist.

All of Palestians are Christians??? 99% of the Gaza residents are Muslim

specialsubject · 11/08/2014 20:55

there is no one belief for all Jews, or all Christians.

you could read the Jewish Chronicle (thejc.com) for some ideas - but they report lots of different viewpoints. As it should be.

MexicanSpringtime · 11/08/2014 21:13

duh! Sorry, a lot of Palestinians are Christians

So the Israel of the bible is a different entity to the Israel of today? I never thought of it like that; I thought nothing had changed in terms of God's 'chosen people'. Thanks for that, and thanks to others, too, for your replies.

If you want to be more informed about what is going on you could do worse than to take a look at the threads here. There are many links to articles and reports on both sides of the debate. It is worth taking the time to read them.

Religion has very little to do with this conflict.

mexican , no 0.7% of Gazians are christians.
In 1948, the whole area was part of Britain.

Ok, maybe I don't have the percentage of Christians, but really part of Britain? Who were their MPs, caroldecker?

caroldecker · 12/08/2014 07:20

No MPs, but British as in part of the British Empire, with the right to free travel anywhere in the Empire as British citizens.

PistolWhipped · 12/08/2014 09:10

Thanks, OneEgg, that is just what I need. Will go and learn summat...

Not part of Britain - Ruled under a mandate, but Palestinians (whether Jews or Arabs) not British citizens.
