Hi, i literally have no idea where to put this, but just wanted to share as no one would believe me in RL!

Last night i had a dream where my tooth went all manky and rotten and started falling out. It wasnt a very nice dream. Anyway, this morning i wake up to see on FB that one of my best mates knocked her tooth out again last night :o (She knocked it out about 9 months ago or so). Its weird that she was out last night doing that, probably a similar time to when i was having that dream! Anyone else think that that is odd?! Any explanations? I know its just a coincidence really, and she has done it before, but the dream was about me knocking mine out, not her. And i have never had that kind of dream before- ever.

I think i am magic ;)

I've read before that dreams involving teeth dissolving or crumbling or falling out, etc. are related to personal stress or insecurity about something.

Chances are it has nothing to do with your friend!

Of course we all know that dreams are your brain sorting out all the information which it has stored up and can manifest in many weird and wonderful ways!

Woowoowoowoo · 26/01/2014 10:28

Not to be disrespectful Pedro but we don't actually 'know' that. Experts still aren't sure why we dream.

This teeth thing seems a bit tenuous mind!

I on the other hand can predict the future with my dreams Grin.

Seriously though a friend had a dream I was pregnant (was a shock to us as two babies close together). Hadn't told anyone...and she text simply saying 'are you pregnant?'. I had to tell her. Even more weirdly it was a friend I never hear from and I was going to text her as I'd dreamed about her that same night!!!

A few weeks ago I was in the shower randomly thinking about a childhood friend and if she'd have another child...later in the day she text saying she was!

Weird.

Actually, experts are pretty certain. One thing they certainly know that dreams are not are methods of prediction or premonition, despite the weird coincidences which happen occasionally.

Back in the dark ages when I studied psychology the theory that was doing the rounds was that dreams were the way the brain processed information that it received during the day. A bit like a computer backing up info and the brain had to be offline, ie asleep whist it did it. As computing was making huge strides forward in the 80s this makes sense as a metaphor.

In the past 30 years or so neuroscience has had a big impact on the understanding of how we dream and theories about why so whether the brain backing up info is the model of choice when explaining why we dream is still being used or not you would have to ask a psychologist.

Science as always produces theories about the how. That is what it is good at. Then the next batch of research comes along and the theories change and that makes science fascinating. The why is much more tricky than the how and in the case of dreams there are lots of theories about the why.

Teeth falling out is a common dream theme. As is flying and turning up to work naked. What that means in terms of an individual's life probably only makes sense to the individual although there are books and courses that will take your money and tell you otherwise.

I don't believe that dreams are predictions so OP I think you can put yours down to coincidence. We tend to only notice and remember the dreams that do 'come true'

I do find the subject fascinating though and I'm not sure that "your brain sorting out all the information which it has stored up" is an adequate explanation for what we experience. Perhaps the storing/sorting is going on as well, but the dreams I experience contain content that is not part of everyday life.

I frequently have dreams that have an actual plot. Whatever part of my mind is creating them is much better at creating fiction than I am. It can also surprise me, which suggests to me that it's separate from my conscious mind. It also seems to have better access to my memories than I do.

It seems to be over elaborate to be just the side effects of a filing system

IndigoBarbie · 27/01/2014 20:17

I have an alternate view on the dreamstate. They may be our brains working through stuff from the day - but they are also the same as our daily thoughts and visions we have..daydreaming? I see us as energy beings, whose energy doesn't switch off just because our bodies are asleep.
Many of my dreams have been foretelling of future events, so therefore I have a subjective point of view based upon my own experiences.
OP - you'd just have to chalk this up to very interesting, and keep track of your dreams from here on in. They can be very very useful IMO

PedroYoniLikesCrisps · 27/01/2014 21:56

I see us as energy beings

Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?

Woowoowoowoo · 29/01/2014 16:36

Pedro - I think if you do your research it's still not known why we dream. Can you link to the 'pretty sure' verdict?

Jung's work on dreams is very interesting.

IndigoBarbie · 30/01/2014 09:52

Pedro, I think I've already attempted to explain this on an alternate thread?

midnightagents · 31/01/2014 19:36

Hey everyone, wow thanks for the replies! Wasn't expecting any really, just me applauding myself for being so magic Grin

Love everyones different ideas about what dreams could be, fascinating!

I had another one last night about a hen who laid lots of eggs, any insight into that one anyone? I'm currently holed up with flu so my brains probably on overdrive in my sleep.

My best friend lives abroad. When she was pregnant, a few weeks (I think three) before her due date I dreamt that she was having her baby. I told my mom that morning and she urged me to call her. Got through to her mum and guess what...she was indeed in hospital giving birth.

Her mum called me a witch Blush

Maisie0 · 02/05/2014 22:13

I do believe that sometimes we have a connection with someone. Why did her mom called you a witch ?

I had a premonition before, and I really did find myself in that city, and in that office working as well. It was a bad omen. I did not understand it then at the time, cos I did not feel that it was negative. But it happened to be the most traumatic experience of my life.

Recently, I also dreamt that I was married as well as I was dating my ex.
