We often have guests over for the weekend (Saturday-Sunday).

Is it rude to go to church on Sunday mornings if we have guests?! I'm never sure!

No. I'd mention it Saturday night and leave 'em to it!

beansontoast · 21/07/2006 15:46

no

KathyMCMLXXII · 21/07/2006 15:48

No. See if they'd like to come too and if not, tell them where the coffee is and leave them to it.
Rude is when you say, 'We're off to church - do you mind doing Sunday lunch? There's a joint of beef and some vegetables in the fridge, and don't forget the Yorkshire pudding.'

JessaJam · 21/07/2006 15:48

I don't think so. My aunt and family are catholic and when we would stay over at christmas they woudl go out to the evening service on christmas eve and the christmas morning service and leave us heathens to our own devices...I never had a second thought about it. Agree with expat, let them know it's what you're doing and what sort of time you'll be back...

teabags · 21/07/2006 15:50

I don't go to chuch myself but if I was staying with you I'd think it pefectly acceptable for you to go.

Perhaps you could invite them ? they may join you?

lucy5 · 21/07/2006 15:50

No, I would just tell them to help themselves to whatever they need.

teabags · 21/07/2006 15:51

it' so obvious I don't go , I can't even spell church

CarolinaMoose · 21/07/2006 15:51

no - invite them to come with you and leave them with brekky-type things and maybe the sunday papers if they turn it down.

alligator · 21/07/2006 15:54

Gosh no not at all. Like the idea of leaving them to cook Sunday dinner tho. Might have to take up going to Mass

MrsBadger · 21/07/2006 15:59

not rude at all, second all suggestions other posters have made re inviting them but leaving them with the papers if they don't fancy it.

but if guests had eg travelled a long way, we didn't see them often, it was their birthday on the Sunday, and I knew they weren't going to be up for coming with us, then I might consider not going in order to spend more time with them.

more rude imho is guests who pipe up "we are going to church aren't we?" an hour before mass when you are out shopping with them and nowhere near the church (a la MIL on her last visit - and it was embarrassingly obvious that it was the last thing on our minds...)

gomez · 21/07/2006 16:23

Presuming that you don't expect them to join you then, absolutely not.

MaryBS · 21/07/2006 16:42

I'd mention it before they came to stay and then its up to them. If they'd come a long way, I'd probably go the the 8am service so it didn't impact on their time with us so much.

scienceteacher · 22/07/2006 20:54

Not rude to go to church at all. You could always invite them along! If they don't want to go, they'd probably value the space to themselves.
