Singing in church

I'm looking for practical advice / siping posting please.

I attend church fairly regularly (most weeks) but for one reason or another, it's a new church for me, quite "high church", which I like, and I often don't know the tune of the hymns. When this has happened before I follow the crowd as it were, but here no one else seems to know them either so it's really quit. Where can I get learned in this area? IYSWIM.
TIA.

It might be an idea to find out which hymn book is used and buy a copy with music? Even if you don't read music it is possible, with practice, to see the general outline/direction of the tune. Is there a choir?

Oh thanks vicarlady I will ask next week.
Yes, they do have a choir, but they're not present during the family service that we tend to go to with the dcs.

You could also make a note of hymns that are sung and then look them up on Youtube. They won't all be on there but some will.

Ohh. Good idea.
Must pay more attention next time.

Some churches - especially high - have a monthly music list that is posted in advance to their website, or in their parish magazine; often including the hymn numbers as well as the settings and anthems. Obviously you'd still need to know what hymn book they're using to make sense of that, but there are a limited number of possibilities.
