Is a Methodist Minister called Reverend?

Why would somebody claim to be Anglican but say they were ordained by the Methodist Church?

Can't help with the question in your main post, I'm afraid - but all of the Methodist ministers I knew in childhood were called Reverend.

Weegiemum · 08/11/2013 18:27

Methodists and CofE have some arrangement, though I'm not sure exactly what .....

Is there a register of ministers in both these churches? Can I look a person up to find out if they're genuinely ordained?

Yes a Methodist minister is called a reverend as is an Anglican minister. Some churches are LEPs or Local Ecumenical Partnerships so there will be Methodists and Anglicans working together. I've heard of Baptist ministers retraining as Anglicans but not Anglicans who used to be Methodist ministers but hey it is a broad church out there.

If the Church of England refused to ordain somebody could they be ordained by the Methodists then just refer to themselves as Anglican after ordination?

Anglican clergy are listed in Crockfords, maybe your local library has a copy?

www.crockford.org.uk/

This is for Anglican clergy. I'm not sure about Methodists.

Why not ask them?

Pleasejustgetitoffme · 14/11/2013 21:21

I can't ask them because I believe them to be a fake. I believe that they're passing themselves off as something they're not.

They claim to be some sort of professor who lectures in theology but I can't find them anywhere on the net. They also told me that the Church of England would not accept them for ordination so they approached the Methodist church instead.

It is possible to be ordained and hard to find online as some ministers are very careful of their online footprint but if you teach theology you will be on the staff list of the institution which will be online so you would expect to find them through that route.

If you are concerned about this person then talk to your church leader. It is fairly common for people to turn up at churches claiming to be an elder/minister/professor/priest/teacher but it is fairly easy to check as everyone in church leadership knows someone who trained with someone else who is married to and so it goes.

Thank you. They don't live in my area. They're in another part of the country, so it doesn't affect me directly ifyswim. I have been taken in by this person and alarm bells started ringing so I was just doing some checking.

The John Rylands library lists methodist clergy but I don't know how recent it goes, it may just be for historical research.
