Diwali firework-related celebrations usually span over two days - Diwali this year was on Sunday 3rd, but Monday 4th is New Years Day and so some people celebrate on this day instead.

Maybe today's fireworks are to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day? In my (very multicultural) area, there are Guy Fawkes Day firework displays advertised locally for every day this week, the latest being on Saturday 9th Nov.

So in a similar vein, maybe people are celebrating Diwali on other days too.

Either way, I would complain if the fireworks were happening late at night (after 9/10pm), but otherwise I think it's pretty reasonable to be celebrating either event with fireworks.

I can totally understand your confusion!

I am Hindu and celebrate Diwali every year but need to call Mum back in India to confirm dates every year.

The thing is - Diwali is celebrated by many, very different communities in India. Most of them celebrate it over 2 days - Diwali Night, then the next morning is Diwali Morning. The actual dates are decided based on the lunar calendar, but there is some variation across communities.

I am from the South of India, and we celebrated this year on Fri night/Sat morning. My friends from the north of India celebrated on Sat night/Sun morning. Sun night would be left over fireworks or Diwali parties or early Bonfire night fireworks!

But 1am is way too late - I would be extremely irritated to hear fireworks that late over 3-4 nights. I think your council would have a designated "Diwali late night" - maybe you could check which one it is, and complain?

We hate noisy fireworks (plus don't want to disturb our predominantly non-Hindu neighbours with small children!) so just do sparklers and light lamps [smug emoticon]

Hope that helps!

Thank you Kipsy. (Ive namechanged to a DR Who name but Im the OP!!!!

the council website says Diwali and New Years are allowed fw till am.

But that's prob why there were more fw? wit different Indian days for Diwali? Theres Hiundu and Sihk isn't there?

(sorry Im very ignorant with religious customs).

we do live in a heavy multi cultural area. thank you for clearing that up agin, Kipsy !
