Should We Thank God For Scientific Discoveries?

Hello Daftme

You say we should thank god for scientific advancements. I say what makes you think they have anything to do with god?

I cannot say for sure. Jesus healed children in the Bible and all that was spoken about was their parent's faith. Jesus also healed a women by her just touching his clothes and her faith was spoken about. Needless to say faith is involved.

daftdame · 13/08/2013 19:00

Saying that, I believe the person being healed would have to be open minded enough to accept healing from God, God would not heal them against their will.

curlew · 13/08/2013 19:27

Daftdame- before I go. Can you give me an example of a miracle in modern times?

headinhands · 13/08/2013 19:29

Did Lazarus pray while he was dead?

So these babies with faith. How come so many people claim to never have believed in a god let alone Yahweh. How come 99.8% of Afghanistans are Muslim? How come more of them don't go 'wait a minute, this isn't the god I believed in when I was a baby?' Or is the specific deity not important. In which case why does Jesus say differently?

As if by some sort of miracle, this was in the UsVsTh3m daily bulletin today:

usvsth3m.com/post/58141693195/miracle-weeping-tree-is-actually-a-fountain-of-bug

TLDR: Miracle tree weeping tears is actually aphid excrement.

curlew · 13/08/2013 20:14

I think it was Lazarus' sisters that had the faith.

headinhands · 13/08/2013 20:55

So god does overide the free will thingy?

OP posts:
headinhands · 13/08/2013 20:59

So potentially you could pray for someone without them knowing, by way of being dead or whatever, and god could still intervene even though the 'prayee' has no idea? How does that sit with free will?

OP posts:
daftdame · 13/08/2013 21:03

curlew definitively I can't since I am not concerned with proof, my faith is enough for me, I don't even pursue 'proof' particularly. So I thank God for all that is good, I don't split that into miracle and non miracle....as I have said I believe the spiritual can manifest into the physical anyway, so an unbeliever would probably deem the physical change to be the cause or 'spontaneous'.

curlew · 13/08/2013 21:07

Fair enough. As I said, no debate to be had.

daftdame · 13/08/2013 21:11

God does not override free will. God knows all, even concerning the dead, headinhands. There is much I don't know yet, personally, and these are very difficult questions. Does science have an answer?i

headinhands · 13/08/2013 22:22

Can I just say that I appreciate your honesty dame. I'm not a science head or whatever. What I try to be is logical. I want to feel that I am applying the same rules to all the things I think about.

Many questions I ask myself are difficult to think about let alone answer, as they are for all of us regardless of what beliefs, or lack of, we may hold.

Morning. So this baby, who have he baby the disease?

OP posts:
daftdame · 14/08/2013 06:55

Morning.Smile

I don't understand your last question.

To elaborate on free will. Christians want God to do His will in their lives. We pray 'They will be done,'. We dedicate our lives to Christ. He knows our hearts, so He would know whether we wanted His will for us.

daftdame · 14/08/2013 06:56

^Off course that should be 'Thy'. See my typing is equally bad this morning!!

daftdame · 14/08/2013 06:56
Grin
headinhands · 14/08/2013 07:06

So if he knows out hearts we don't need to pray at all then? And if its all about free will then we waste our time when we pray for others because unless they ask for it themselves then its contravenes that persons free will?

The baby, who gave them the disease?

OP posts:
headinhands · 14/08/2013 07:12

And besides. My heart is incapable of thinking last time I checked. Shouldn't god know we use our brain to think?

OP posts:
daftdame · 14/08/2013 07:20

If we want to have a relationship with God we do pray.

The hypothetical disease would not be from God, as God wants us well, offers redemption and healing through Christ, when Jesus was on earth He went around healing people.

Diseases can be inherited, the Old Testament describes inheritance, as a result of 'the sins of the fathers'. There was original sin and sins committed by people since that. It's why blood lines are so important before full redemption was available through Christ. However since Christ, the New Testament shows us we have redemption and healing available through Him, blood lines are no longer important.

Diseases are not good, so do not come through God. Bacteria and viruses (I vaguely remember some being used in medicine from a New Scientist article) can also work to our good.

daftdame · 14/08/2013 07:22

It is interesting that there is bio-feedback between the heart and the brain, but heart can also be used to mean core...

headinhands · 14/08/2013 07:31

So where do diseases come from if god didn't create them? Is it just disease that doesn't come from god or other icky stuff too like that African worm that borrows through your eye?

So is it, or is it not pointless for you to pray about Uncle Frank's bad back without him wanting you to seeing as for god to meddle it would mean overriding free will?

OP posts:
daftdame · 14/08/2013 07:37

As I have said bacteria, viruses and even worms do not have to work to harm us. In their proper place there is purpose to them. I do not know what exactly the purpose of everything is, however.

If Uncle Frank did not want God's healing, he wouldn't receive God's healing.

curlew · 14/08/2013 07:41

So basically it's no point praying for anyone unless you're sure they want to be prayed for? I'd agree with that- but probably for different reasons.

headinhands · 14/08/2013 08:13

So this dying baby, if it dies when it's prayed for then the baby didn't have enough faith? How would the baby know it was being prayed for?
