I have recently started going to local church, liberal c of e.I would like to learn more about christianity as was brought up not in any tradition .I have been reading tons of books and have chatted to vicar a little.I really don't fancy Alpha as have read one of the books and thought it rather prescriptive on subjects such as sex outside marriage, homosexuality and seemed very into charismatic stuff.I read a post somewhere on here about the Emmaus course and looked on website which looks interesting, Anyone with any experience of it??

We did an Emmaus course over Lent, I found it really inspiring. Alpha never appealed to me either.

We are just starting up a more regular Emmaus study programme in our church. What will probably happen is that more than one group will form, and it will be down to each group as to what they discuss. There ARE beginners topics though, covering all sorts of things from being a Christian to bible study, through to stuff for more established churchgoers. Its very flexible and is designed to suggest topics for a group to discuss/study, rather than dictate what they do.

What does your vicar say about it? If there are no groups within your parish, what about elsewhere locally for you?

I havent done it but I was asked to write a letter for someone who was on a course (they are given letters from friends during the course).
Our friends who did it really enjoyed it and it was a real turning point in their spiritual life.

What books have you been reading? My dh is a real christian book hoarder and it would be interesting to know what you had found useful.

I've been assisting in the teaching of a confirmation class. The book we use is excellent - its called Faith Confirmed:

I think the thing about Emmaus, is its less organised, less structured. Groups form to discuss particular topics, then it may split up and go off to form new groups. At least, thats what I've been told. I'm waiting to hear when our next groups will be forming....
