we are redoing the stained glass in our front door. we have three painted panels included in the design....

i'm really into the importance of symbolism, especially at the entrance of our home. i want to incorporate bluebells as they are important to us. we can include birds, animals and insects in the design. might use wren or robin.

any info on powerfully protective and auspicious symbolism very gratefully received!!

Just seen this. About to have dinner but will look some stuff up and post later for you.

SaintGeorge · 22/04/2006 20:35

Wren
Important to the Druids, who saw it as 'Supreme of all birds'. Sacred to most magical beliefs. Wrens feathers are lucky and protect against disaster, especially involving water.

Robin
A symbol of compassion, domestic peace and tranquility, fertility. A symbol of hope for mariners (seeing a nautical theme here Smile)

Bluebells
The bells of the little folks, ring one to call for their presence. Symbolic of the lover of the moon goddess, they prevent nightmares and terrors, protecting your home during the sleeping hours. Also a fertility flower having associations with the Beltaine rituals.

SaintGeorge · 22/04/2006 20:40

Dove
From an ancient symbol of love and renewal of life to a modern symbol for peace. In Christianity portrays the Holy Spirit, for many faiths it can be symbolical of the soul.

Mistletoe
For Pagans a symbol of peace, love and friendship.

SaintGeorge · 22/04/2006 21:15

Bears
An emblem of power and protection. Honey bears symbolise truth.

Bees
Gods messengers and carriers of good souls in the next life. Only use a single bee though, swarms are not so good symbolically.

Butterflies
A good inspiration for transformation. A group of butterflies indicates positive change on the way.

Crickets
In some beliefs, crickets are reincarnated family members come to bless the home. They are a good luck charm.

Donkeys
A donkey symbolises fertility and easy childbirth. Also of efficiency, health, well-being, and luck.

Dragons
A symbol of wisdom due to long lives and potent magic.

Dragonflies
Harmony and serendipity. A symbol of dreams, luck, and ancient knowledge.

Fish
Associated with messiahs and saviors, they symbolise good luck and prosperity. Used as a symbol for foresight, fortune, and miracles.
Carp are symbolic of true love and courage, because of their upstream swim to spawning ground.

Lions
Images of lions can protect sacred ground. Symbolic of just laws and fairness prevailing.
A grown lion to inspire strength and courage, lion cubs to inspire mercy and gentleness.

Tortoises/Turtles
Symbolise persistence and wise choices

saintgeorge thank you so much.

i'm so excited by this project, i feel like it's an opportunity to turn things around for us (have been very stressed and relations between dh and i not good since we moved in.

any ideas for good plants to plant in front (v small) garden?

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 00:29

Plants I'm not great on - I can give you the symbolism but they might not be ideal for planting conditions etc.

Herbs are good symbolically for homes and can look pretty as well as adding lovely smells, easy to grow too. Varieties of sage and lavender spring to mind.

If you can think of anything in particular you want in your glass design, let me know and I can look it up for you if you want.

fairyfly · 23/04/2006 00:29

Sounds wonderful

Heathcliffscathy · 23/04/2006 00:37

ladybirds\

frogs

we're thinkng of roses for the front, but also lavender window boxes

dh wants white throated dippers for the glass (exasperated emoticon, how the f am i going to find the symbolism for them???)

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 00:46

Ladybirds are connected to the Virgin Mary, or Gaia and various other goddessess for Pagans. A nice proctective symbol.

Frogs - hmmm, not sure about that one. Symbolic of metamorphisis and change which might be good, but also of family abandonment. Possibly not such a good choice.

SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 00:52

Roses in general mean heartfelt love but also, from the past, kingly power.

You would really need to pin down a colour scheme and then look up the individual colours for better reference.

Lavender is a cleanser but also means loyalty and devotion.

White throated dipper I have never even heard of. I'm guessing a bord but further clues please Smile

Heathcliffscathy · 23/04/2006 00:54

there will be no frogs.

so at the moment it is:

bluebells, pair of butterflies, pair of dragonflies, pair of birds (robins/wrens/dippers), ladybirds, some green grass (which sound weird but i had an incredible (most incredible of my life actually) dream that i was hovering above the most vividly green beautiful grass and everytime i breathed out it was like a hot air balloon and went upwards and i was in white robes and there was one man and a few other women doing the same but i was focussed on me...it was wonderful, and the only symbol from it that i feel can be incorporated is the grass...any dream interpretation gratefully received.

river dwelling bird, looks a bit like a wren but fishes!

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 00:58

If it is at all related to the wren than you can probably take the symbolism to be close. Will try to find out more but not a common one I have come across.

You need papillon for dreams - she is great at those.

Papillon · 23/04/2006 08:26

your dream sophable is about air, in you, between the grasses and around you as you float. the white dress is like the air. to me this dream is all about thoughts.

check out what this woman says about balloons and breath. \link{http://home.tiscali.nl/gibbon/turtle/20050220-turtle-8.htm\this}
...Here is what I have come up with so far. When it is 'balloon-time' I think my intentions are stronger. So, I try to intend all kinds of things during these times. Intentions like: "I intend to have new thoughts", "I intend to grasp more of what is happening in my subconscious"

you have a man and women in the dream.
YIELD
Those two-chief dreams are great luck. You had to trick power to find it. Its symbol is big medicine, medicine that woman has forgotten. It was greatly dangerous, but now you can help them remember that medicine. You have smoked the male and the female within your lodge-self and you have come to a place where the roads fork. You can change and grow. You begin to understand what it really means to yield. Woman thinks she yield, but she has forgotten how. Many women's lodges stand deserted because no one looks inside. Reach for that high warrior waiting in the woman's lodge. Embrace him and be free. (lynn andrews book)

I have a feeling, and you are supposed to go on them when being intuitive, that it would be good to try and feel the group energy of the people in your dream. I like the association between yield and the grasses. The green to me is calling for green in your life. Perhaps some stones, jade? Do you like Feng Shui? If you are not having frogs perhaps a turtle instead? I send you some questions for an answer :) !

SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 13:00

Hiya Paps.

I have lost your email address - DH dared to touch the PC and lots of horrible things have happened to it Shock

Drop me a line when you get a sec please so I can reinstate you in my address book. Hope you and yours are all doing fabulously well Smile.

Heathcliffscathy · 23/04/2006 22:08

thank you so much both of you....we're looking at swallows or housemartins now.

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 22:17

Swallows A good one, embodies the Spirit of Air, a harbinger of Spring, traditionally a good luck amulet.

Martins Unable to find a specific Housemartin reference but Martins in general are good luck and symbols of community peace. They emphasise peaceful living energies so an excellent choice.

Heathcliffscathy · 23/04/2006 22:31

hummingbirds?

am i pissing you off yet????

:o

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 22:34

Hummingbirds are pure joy & love. Also the belief and will to do the impossible.

No, it's nice that I (and my collection of books & internet favourites) can be useful Smile

Heathcliffscathy · 23/04/2006 22:36

only thing about hummingbirds is that the male has nothing to do with raising the kids and changes partner frequently....git :o

thank you...this is such a lovely project...

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 22:41

That is reason enough to leave hummingbirds out then Grin

SaintGeorge · 23/04/2006 22:42

Hope you can take a piccy of the window when it is done. Would love to see it.

fairyfly · 24/04/2006 17:23

Funny you should say that about hummingbirds sophable, i've been drawn to using them loads lately and are in a lot of my images.
