Bible fiction or non fiction?

So, as an atheist I consider the bible to be fiction - a collection of stories,

However according to library cataloguing rules it's non fiction, and i'm not sure if this is accurate or bizarre.

What do religious folk think? Which side of the fence are you on? Genuinely baffled.

Gosh reading this thread is like going back in time. A little reunion of all the philosophy/religion posters from years back. Am a bit nostalgic Grin

It is one of the most amazing works of fictions I have read, it has shaped nations and people, both in good and bad, for many years.

@Vitaology

Yes it is. However it was created in a time where people were scared of the world around them, before science could explain a lot.

The sad fact is if you forbid any form of religion to be taught until age 18, there'd be a lot more atheists around. My point is that it's taught to children and they will believe it.

Yes it is. However it was created in a time where people were scared of the world around them, before science could explain a lot. That doesn't account for the following still today. There are truths in it that can be recognised. Not saying that all followers have recognised this.

The sad fact is if you forbid any form of religion to be taught until age 18, there'd be a lot more atheists around. My point is that it's taught to children and they will believe it. The way it's taught turns as many off as on imo. So I don't think atheist should worry about it. There's an innate need in us from birth for something other than the material world though. Again my opinion.

I put the bible in the "Theory" section, as in it's not completely fiction (although there are some great stories in it) but it's certainly not fact. A while ago I acquired some free bibles and tried to get as many translations as I can get. They sit in my bedside unit in the same drawer as Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking.

I'm an atheist but I enjoyed reading this thread so thank you for reviving it.
I was brought up catholic (taught by nuns) so took a fair bit in by osmosis. Had to study St Mark's Gospel in great depth.
I always preferred the old testament though, lots more action and drama.
