Any Greek Orthodox's out there? Help with Baptism q!

DH is GO, I am Anglican. We are planning DS's Baptism, and so far have 2 non-GO godparents (my brother & my best friend, so both people who are close to us & will be around for a while).

We cannot decide on a GO godparent at all - to the point we are considering asking the priest if it would be an issue if DS didn't have one.

Do you think they will allow it? I'm getting a bit frustrated by it now (and MiL's interference, but that's another matter!).

As far as I'm aware GO church will not consider any non GO as godparents. When dn was christened the non GOs were basically sidelined. Also its tradition that the christening gown cross & all others items required are bought by the Godparents, when dcs were christened this run into several hundreds.
Pm me if you need further info & I'll try & help out, however any GO christening shop will be able to advise.

Also forgot to add that Godparents also buy a coat, 3 lots of the following, outfits for baby, vests, socks, baby's first pair of shoes there may well be more & I'll find out if you need to though.

Thanks. We had DD baptised last March (2011) and had 1 GO godparent and 1 non-GO. The church was happy with this.
Not sure they'd be so accommodating this time though Sad
My DH is going to ask the priest I think; otherwise we'll just have to ask someone just for the sake of it.

It depends on the Priest I think with regard to nonGO godparents. DS2 and DD have both GO and nonGO ones, but they had to have the GO one. DH actually accidentally became someone's godparent because he was the only GO person suitable in the Church (GO side of the family had a massive car breakdown and didn't make it to the church on time) In that situation the nonGO godparent was definitely sidelined. We had a different experience - the Priest at the church we use was more than happy to give the nonGO godparent something to do, as long as it was the GO one that did the official bits (both GO and nonGO GPs signed the certificate)

Oh and whilst two of our DC had godparents who were willing and able to pay out large amounts of money, one had one who wasn't quite in the same financial position. So we paid for a lot of things (iirc they bought a couple of outfits and the cross and we got everything else)

Different families seem to have slightly different ways of doing it as well, so I'd ask around as to what's 'expected'.

Oh ignore that last bit - if you've gone through it once you know what you're doing Grin

Thanks Smile

Will see what the Priest says then. To be honest I got far more sidelined than the non-GO GP last time, I felt very Sad twiddling my thumbs.

Neither parent gets involved at GO christening, it's all about the baby & godparents! But if you've been through it before you'll know the drill.
