Why don't you just ask one of your friends for a chat. Far more effective!

eBay have recently banned tarot reading services for a good reason you know! (because it is a load of utter bollox).

Schrodingershamster · 10/09/2012 19:28

I do chat to my friends honestly. They are all lovely (which is why they are my friends) and helpful. As i said im not very woo and its not a hue deal but i am curious. Thats all.:)

Curious about what? Your future?

We are all curious about our future, but it is impossible to predict what it is!

Curious about tarot and the like?

Don't bother wasting your time - it is all bollox. How on earth could someone turn a card and predict something happening in the future? All that occurs, is that they guess (*) and you then walk around for the next 6 months making connections for events because you want to make a connection with the "predictions". If people could genuinely predict the future, do you not think they would be world famous and be multi-billionaires (having won the lottery countless times in a row).

(*) footnote: I am not saying that some people (even intelligent people) don't genuinely think they can read tarot cards or tea leaves, some really think they can. To be honest, people who genuinely believe they can do it (called shut-eyes) are a little bit tup, but at least they are well meaning idiots people (like my MIL). The people who do tarot readings and know that it is all woo woo (called open-eyes) are the bastards, since they prey on vulnerable people and con them out of money and give them false hope.

Before anyone tries to have a discussion about how tarot cards don't work like that, and they couldn't predict the lottery results because it works in a different way, blah, blah, blah. Please don't bother, since you will just be typing tosh.

You will meet a tall dark and handsome penguin who will whisk you away to Frankfurt for a weekend of fish and reasonably priced hotels.

So says my teabag anyway.

technodad · 10/09/2012 20:31

Wow - reading teabags! That is a new one on me! Smile

I'm a black belt in tea-chi Grin

Schrodinger, I've tried various channels of wisdom regarding life guidance. By far the most effective of them have been counsellors. I recommend them every time :)

To do a bit of fence-sitting, I did see a couple of counsellors who were into apparently woo techniques - the crucial point here is that they were simply ways of letting me see what I really thought about an issue, rather than claiming to have extra-terrestrial guidance. If you fancy a bit of that, find a counsellor who is also a hypnotherapist and/or NLP trainer.

Here's one to try at home: Tie a heavy-ish object, like a pebble, to sewing thread - or use a solid pendant on a chain. Do a bit of Nice Thoughts around this object, which is going to help your insight. Put your issue on a piece of paper, with four points like a compass. (Example: "Belgravia bedsit; Clapham flat; Islington flat; Billericay house".) In a calm, comfortable atmosphere, rest your elbow on the table with the pendant wrapped loosely round your index finger. Focus quietly until it stops swinging. Now ask your question. Your pendant should start rocking or circling. Wait until it settles over one of the points. Instead of settling, it might just swing violently towards a point - or, if yours is a "Yes; No" question - circle clockwise for Yes and anti-clock for No.

This is not woo, neither is it infallible. It can help you sort your head out, though!

technodad · 11/09/2012 21:11

Sorry Garlic,

But how exactly would an object move without any force being exerted on it. You seem to be proposing that the stone violates Newtonian laws, which is impossible!

Schrodinger - I take it from your username that you are a fan of science?

LordEmsworth · 11/09/2012 21:56

The point is, that you take out from any reading the points that are important to you. You subconsciously absorb the bits that are meaningful and discard the other bits, and this allows you to hear and accept your thoughts in a way that our conscious linear thinking doesn't allow us to.

Each card has multiple "traditional" meanings and you can read your own meanings into them as well, so it's entirely what you take from it. A good reader will help you to identify the bits which "speak" to you and from that to project what's meaningful to you. A bad reader will tell you they see the future, or insist that their own interpretation of the card is right, or give you a "fixed" reading without getting your responses to what they say. (I have definitely had more bad readings than good, btw).

Basically, it's your intuition which does the work and that's why they help you sort your head out - because they give the bit of you which doesn't have its own voice, a chance to be heard.

I don't see what's unscientific about that.

technodad · 11/09/2012 22:13

LordE

I that is how it is used (as a catalyst for externalising your thoughts), then it seems fine to me.

garlicnutty · 11/09/2012 23:13

Techno, you can't have read my post properly Grin

The stone is hanging from the questioner's hand.

See you convo with Emsworth above.

technodad · 12/09/2012 06:59

Sorry, I was being dim Wink

RedMolly · 12/09/2012 12:52

Lord Emsworth has explained beautifully how tarot works. Just wanted to add that if you are curious about them you could buy your own deck and a good interpretation book for the cost of a reading and do it yourself - no magic or psychic skills required, maybe just a bit of honesty and insight.

My pendulum reliably informed me that ds was a girl (had to send the frilly knickers back)!

garlicnutty · 12/09/2012 13:05

Grin Molly. Maybe your pendulum tapped into a deep need for frilly knickers?!

RedMolly · 12/09/2012 15:27

Unfortunately they were a tad small for me or i could have been tempted to keep them Grin

SchrodingersMew · 12/09/2012 15:29

I came on this thread and at first glance thought I had posted it and had forgotten...

Schrodingershamster · 12/09/2012 19:51

Been a few posts on here while ive been away !

Firstly Hi other "Schrodinger". I have seen you around , nice to finally meet.

To technodad yes i am a fan of science. Or at least i would hope i am given my choice of career. But my explanation as to why i am interested is pretty much as above. I would take what i wanted to from it - its more about my intuition :)

Although i quite fancy meeting that penguin....
