Comforting bible passage for grieving new mum.

Writing a sympathy card and trying to think of something supportive to say to a new mum who recently lost her husband. She is Christian, I am not. I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of an inspirational / reassuring passage or extract in the bible which might bring her some comfort? TIA

I think it is really nice that you are trying to find comforting words for your friend.

I'm a Christian & lost a baby at 5 months PG this year.

The verses that helped me the most at the time were from 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4 verses 13-18:

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
New International Version (NIV)

Believers Who Have Died
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord?s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

How about

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (TNIV)
[3] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, [4] who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God

Or some verses from

Psalm 23:1-6 (TNIV)
Psalm 23 A psalm of David. [1] The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. [2] He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, [3] he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name?s sake. [4] Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. [5] You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. [6] Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The most obvious one is

Matthew 5:4: - Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Ps46:1: God is our strength and refuge, a very present help in trouble.

Deut33:27 The eternal God is your refuge and underneath are his everlasting arms.

Good ones already suggested.

I read this yesterday in church, and it seems incredibly appropriate for a funeral reading (but perhaps more so for a woman who has died rather than a man):

Song of Solomon, Chapter 2, verses 8-13.

"The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me, "Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtle dove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."

I reckon if she knows you are not a Christian it will seem a bit odd writing a bible passage so I would recommend just writing some heartfelt comment of your own which may well mean more to her as probably other people will have been giving her bible passages.

yes I'm afraid what jaynebxl said is also what I think - if it's not a faith that you share then writing a bible verse isn't really appropriate and wouldn't be helpful. You're better off writing something that you actually believe and can say sincerely. Why don't you have a look at this page of non-religious poetry on the subject and see if you can find a verse that fits the specific situation?

Hopeforever · 09/09/2012 08:00

Not sure I agree. If non Christian friends make the effort to find a suitable Bible verse it means much to me, as do their own personal words
