Advice - "Guide parents"

I am looking for advice and opinions please. We are having a naming ceremony for DD2 in a month's time. I want to ask two friends to be her "guide-parents" (a non-religious version of god-parents). They are practising Catholics and I wanted to know whether they will feel that they can't accept given that the ceremony will be humanist.

Any thoughts? They are very close to DD and would be wonderful "guide parents" but I don't want to put them in a difficult position if it goes against their faith.

What is the purpose of 'guide parents'? The primary purpose of Godparents is to pray for them and encourage their coming to Christ.

In my view guide parents are there to give additional security and sources of guidance throughout my children's lives. We have a small family and they are a symbolic way of extending our family for my children's future benefit.

i think its a good idea to have guide parents because its great to have lots of love and in the future should anything happen they would have someone to watch out for them.
Do you mind though that should anything happen to you and they are needed to step into your DD life in a big way that they are catholics, and would possibly put their beliefs onto her??

I can't see it going against their faith, and think they would love to be asked.

If you think they would be offended or put off by this humanist idea then maybe they are not suited to being guide parents. 'Be good to people' was the main message from Jesus. That suits being a guide parent. For some reason lots of people now worship Mary. I believe, very soon, that will weird ritual will come to an end and we can then all get on with being good Christians, in a non-supernatural way.

The Hebrews worshipped volcanic activity by the way so don't feel unworthy or undeserving of your friends' potential input. You are as good as they are and should be more proud of your own beliefs.
