Has anyone been on a practical parenting (9 week)course run by the school of philosophy? What did you think of it?
I've been having protracted problems with my daughter and came to the conclusion that I needed some prespective before i go crazy. This course was attractively advertised locally , and I am open minded, but last week when I asked where they drew the source material from , the tutor referred to a "wiseman whose name i wouldn't know" and who is visited by their leader to get instruction.(I thought she might have said university of blah blah ) This is not what I was expecting!
Any experiences, positive or negative? Oddly enough the stuff has been helpful , but that maybe because ANY prespective would help.

When we went to 2.0's school for the parents briefing we were told of their views on the philosophy of education, not one name was recognised by us
But the important thing is that we were told the name, and in these days of google searching there is no one of any significance you can't research easily.

"philosophy" is a term frequently used by religious zealots as a cover for attempts at conversion.
The bit about the "wise man" visiting their "leader" sets off alarm bells big time.

As it happens our business is partly driven by having visiting "wise men" impart wisdom and it's an upfront enticement into our web. But we issue the name up front (typically to 35,000 of our closest personal friends).

The info is thus a lure, and for any organisation like this to survive it must be a good lure.
Thus I'm not all the surprised that the stuff you've seen is good.

I'd be very wary of such people, the word "cult" comes to mind very quickly here.

We're not a cult, honest guv.

Whereabouts are you? I went to a free workshop run by The Parent Practice in London. They have various courses, not too expensive. The workshop I attended was excellent.

I'd be wary of paying for a course that is run without proper documentation. Also the comment about the wiseman whose name you wouldn't know would sound v patronising to me and I'd worry that the whole course would be like this, prescriptive.

I know about the practical parenting courses. I'm very surprised that they could'nt give you a name though. It's based on Advita which is the philosophy of unity and a common thread in most eastern and western philosophies; hinduism is based on it and plato talked of it among others.
The wise man referred to is a chap called Shri Shantananda Saraswati who has followed this all his life, lives in India and has many devout followers. The teachings are relevant to anyone in any era east or west ( there u go - unity) Done the course meself and thought it was very useful. The teachings have been adapted for parenting specifically.
Hope that helps.
