Am trying to compile some for DS
Mine from childhood:
O Angel of God
My Guardian dear
To whom god's love
Commits me here
Ever this night
Be at my side
To light
To guard
To rule and guide

One of my favourites from a book of prayers for babies:
"Dear God, Thank you for being with us throughout this day. Please give all in this house a restful night. Amen

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 14/02/2012 16:42

This is what we used before meals, when the children were younger:

Thank you Father for all the things you give
Thank you Father for all we need to live
Let me share with others, so everyone will know
I want to thank you Father, everywhere I go

(to the tune of 10 green bottles)

That's reassuring, newlark, that's pretty much what I pray with the dcs when they go to bed each night and I was starting to wonder if it was too samey. Then again, repetition isn't as boring to a child, is it? And if they develop a habit of praying along the lines, "Dear God, thank you for... Please..." then that's probably not bad!

Not one for saying set prayers, but will watch this thread for ideas to add variety. :)

Our bedtime prayers have been a bit hit and miss so this thread is prompting me to try to do it every night. On a good day I might ask dd (5) what she would like to thank God for or ask God for and then she or I will say a prayer about that and maybe the one above or the Lord's prayer. She is quite prone to just singing one she knows from school in a silly voice so I would like to encourage her to think too!

When I was a child, I vaguely remember one beginning ' Gentle Jesus Meek and Mild' - I'd love to know the rest of it if any one knows it!

Mine from childhood was:

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lay on,
Four corners to my bed,
Four angels round my head,
One to watch and one to pray,
And two to see me through the day

My Dad taught me:

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
Look upon a little child;
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee.

(I only knew the first verse, but it's actually part of a long hymn - the other verses are as follows:

Fain I would to Thee be brought,
Dearest God, forbid it not;
Give me, dearest God, a place
In the kingdom of Thy grace

Lamb of God, I look to Thee;
Thou shalt my Example be;
Thou art gentle, meek, and mild;
Thou wast once a little child.

Fain I would be as Thou art;
Give me Thine obedient heart;
Thou art pitiful and kind,
Let me have Thy loving mind.

Let me, above all, fulfill
God my heav?nly Father?s will;
Never His good Spirit grieve;
Only to His glory live.

Thou didst live to God alone;
Thou didst never seek Thin own;
Thou Thyself didst never please:
God was all Thy happiness.

Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb,
In Thy gracious hands I am;
Make me, Savior, what Thou art,
Live Thyself within my heart.

I shall then show forth Thy praise,
Serve Thee all my happy days;
Then the world shall always see
Christ, the holy Child, in me.)

Thanks Mrs SB. I remember it taking years to understand what the third line meant!

CheerfulYank · 20/02/2012 07:12

DS just does a simple "Thank you, God, for food and friends."

My favorite is:
"May we who have much remember those who have little.
May we who are full remember those who are hungry.
May we who are loved remember those who are lonely.
May we who are safe remember those who are in danger.
May we who have so much learn how to share. Amen"

I like it because it always compels me to act. :)
