ds2 takes his Catholic faith seriously, but is being treated as a doormat. He stands in the lunch queue and the other children tell him that they want to go in front Hmm He lets them because "it says in the Bible that you have to put others first". By the time he gets served, they're running out of food and sometimes he has to go without stuff like chips or sponge. He comes home hungry and feels upset.

What do I tell him? I respect his beliefs, but don't think it's reasonable to allow others to walk all over you because you're a Christian. It does say in the Bible to give people what they want though Hmm

How do you reconcile your beliefs with survival in this competitive and ruthless society?

I can't think how you can stop your DS being taken advantage of, but you could encourage hime that missing out on chips and sponge will keep him healthier :)

Read him a couple of the kick ass people from the Bible like David, he wouldn't have waited in the que.

Also being a Christian doesn't mean he has to be a doormat, 'Love your neighbour as yourself', isn't a mandate to be walked all over. Clearly he isn't loving himself as much as he is loving hos neighbour

Meek is not the same as weak. Jesus stood up for himself against very serious opposition and very strongly criticised those who were hypocrites. He fed the hungry yet he still ate!

faerie has got it spot on.

Thank you for your replies Smile

I'm afraid I've bottled it for the time being and I've sent him in with packed lunch today. I'll speak to the school when I'm off on Wednesday and see what can be done.

ds1 has given ds2 a peptalk about sticking up for himself.

I had forgotten about David Grin Bedtime story material I think.

how old is he OP?

if he is quite young then i don't think it would be unreasonable of you to mention this to school and ask them to just supervise the queue a bit more and maybe stop people taking advantage of him?

ds2 is 7 and ds1 is 13.

I don't know what to say to him about putting others first, because it does say this in the NT and Jesus tells us to give people what they ask for. I worry about giving him contradictory messages Confused
