Adopting a middle name when you're confirmed in the Catholic church?

I've been told that people generally choose the name of a saint to adopt as their middle name when they're confirmed in the Catholic Church. Is this true?

My DH did (I'm not catholic) but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what it is Blush . that's really bad, isn't it?!

He doesn't use it in his name / day to day life though.

Are you being confirmed?

SecretNutellaFix · 05/11/2011 23:10

I had to get my confirmation name allowed by the Bishop because it's not the name of a Saint.

I don't Use it day to day though.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/11/2011 23:18

I did.

Never use it though.

Yes, I'm having instruction now which will lead to confirmation. The lady who's doing it mentioned about my lack of a middle name and said something about having one for confirmation.

I don't think I'll be able to use it really because I'm 41 and people might wonder where it's suddenly come from Confused

I don't use it at all, and was never encouraged to. It was though an important part of my confirmation preparation. I remember writing to the Bishop explaining why I had chosen it. Mine is Clare, after Clare of Assisi.

I did, but don't use it, there's no legality to it.

I choose one, but as I remember, we were never asked to choose one. I chose Cecelia, patron saint of music.

belgo · 06/11/2011 12:34

I mean CeciliaBlush

I chose Carmel, for Mount Carmel and the Carmelite Nuns.

I used my baptismal name (ie...my everyday name) as my confirmation name - this was encouraged as it emphasised the link between baptism and confirmation apparently, but I chose to do this because I wanted to be confirmed in >my< name, not someone elses (I had stong opinions!)

Years later my dd chose a Saints name, which she has adopted as an additional middle name (although not legally), and now marks that saints day. I like the fact that it was her choice (she was a bit young to choose her baptismal names when she was baptised at a few weeks old!).
