I am being baptised!

In two weeks - full immersion baptism! Am both excited and a little nervous. I came to faith about a year ago after attending my good friend's baptism at the same church. She didn't invite many people, only a few friends and her family who are not really believers.

I have made the personal choice to ask lots of people to witness my baptism and help to celebrate this day with me but many of the people I will invite are not Christians or even if they are, they are not used to an Evangelical church so may be a little Hmm! Has anyone else done this? If so, what was the reaction from non-church goers/those of different faiths?

Congratulations!

I go to a very "happy clappy" church, and invited lots of people to my baptism. I think a lot of my guests found it interesting to go into a church where there were no pews, everyone dressed down, and the baptisms were like a celebration party.
It good for people to see that church isn't always bells and smells with a vicar in a dress.

I went to a full immersion baptism to support a friend (not my thing but it was a lovely atmosphere). Several people were baptised on the same day and one wore googles and armbands. I found it hilarious as did most of the others. Can't imagine many more formal churches enjoying that!

Have a lovely day!

Congratulations.

Congratualtions! You know from your own experience of attending a friends baptism that it changed your life! So I think its a great idea to invite lots of people to your baptism.

Aww that's fantastic oxocube. I have often wondered how you are doing since the Alpha thread. Congratulations! It will go brilliantly, I'm sure, and yes invite people you want to celebrate with, they will just be happy you are happy, I should think, and enjoy the party!

Hi Oxocube

Was thinking about mumsnet today (as I was confirmed yesterday!) and the Alpha thread - was feeling guilty that I had 'disappeared' and not updated you all for yonks on the 'post-alpha' thread - I'm afraid new work commitments have cut out my 'mumsnet time' Sad

My church is evangelical and I did wonder how my family and friends would react. I invited everyone, but, as it turned out, not that many 'non-believers' turned up - my mum and dad did come, although my dad practically legged it out of the church after the service. The best/hardest bit for me was doing my testimony - I knew I needed to do it, to share my journey with my church family as well as my own family and friends - especially my husband who is still being Hmm I did worry a bit before the service about how everyone was going to take it but in the end I was so wrapped up in the ceremony of it all, I didn't give it a second thought.

Was a really special day and one i will always remember Smile

Oh how lovely NB. Thanks for sharing. My husband won't be there (long story and he's in London that day anyway) but my kids will come and a few non-Christian friends have already said they will be there, although I suspect they will be a bit like your dad Grin

We have a party planned afterwards as its the church's 5th birthday! I've thought a lot about my testimony and decided just to go with what is in my heart. Its hard to stand up in front of 300 people and I have to keep it to a couple of minutes anyway, so I just hope Jesus guides me through it and lets other people feel His love for them, as I did a year ago.

Like you, I know non-believers will think its all a bit 'out there' but I don't care Smile

congratulations! and enjoy!
Our DD was baptised at Easter. Just main-stream Anglican church with smells and bells.
She's 2,5 and she really knew what was going to happen and was very proud and serious about it!

Don't worry about your testimony! Jesus will guide you!

Congratulations! Have a wonderful day. I hope your friends and family enjoy it.

WillowFae · 12/05/2011 15:36

I'm from the Alpha thread like newbeliever, and also feel guilty for not posting here.

But had to say congrats to you oxocube :) I hope you enjoy your day and that God really touches you, and your friends and family :)

I admit to being wary about inviting non-Christians to my church as it can be a bit full on - tongues, prophetic words, healing, etc.

gingercurl · 12/05/2011 17:22

Oxo, congratulations! Brilliant! Enjoy the occasion. I remember my own baptism in the sea (full immersion) nearly 30 many years ago still very vividly. I'll be thinking about you on Sunday.

nickelbabe · 12/05/2011 17:25

Congratulations oxo Grin

invite who you want to invite - they'll be there to support you, not to support your church iyswim.
Most will turn up for you.

(but then if they don't, it's their problem, not yours, and it doesn't mean they don't love you, it means they can't cope with the style of worship)

what an exciting time for you!

oxocube · 12/05/2011 18:02

Thank you everyone Smile

I know it will be a very special day!!
