Hoping for some inspiration! Me and DH are Godparents to a great friend's new son - really exciting and a huge honour! I am looking for inspiration for baptism gifts from both of us, and I am thinking maybe too things - one relgious as that is a very important part of it for us (I am CofE and DH is Catholic, new Godson catholic), bible would be obvious but I worry that his other Godparent (also Catholic) might get that for him? So maybe a special prayer book or something? or a framed prayer???
and the other a non-religious personalised keepsake type thing - embriodered cushion or something like that???
Has anyone any ideas on either of these?
thanks v much!

A roman coin? Or a Greek one. Keep their value and great to take into school when they domit later.

An antique silver napkin ring?

I would avoid expensive religious otters. 40 years later mine is still in a box ( and we are religious)

A childs bible is nice as well though.

A lovely noahs ark- wood that can be played with and passed down generations.

We got our Godson a fob watch engraved with his initials.

Not otters. I have no idea why it says otters. I typed stuff.

I got my god-daughter lovely wooden Noah's Ark bookends which I had personalised with a little plaque on the back and a silver bible which came in a presentation case and I wrote a message inside the bible for her. I got the bookends as I love reading and hoped this would be something I could share with her and enjoy with her as she grew up. I buy her a book for her birthday every year (waterstones do lovely hardback children's classics) for her to enjoy when she is older and to go in the bookends.

If there is something that you really enjoy and hope he might be able to spend time doing with you as he gets older perhaps you could base one present around this?

Other than that, the ideas you have sound lovely!

A Georgian silver spoon.

My son has a Victorian truncheon which was a christening gift. He has always liked it.

thanks so much everyone, really brilliant ideas.

The Expensive Religious Otter has made me laugh. A lot. Especially as when I first read your post I just (randomly) thought "meh, maybe that is a catholic thing, to give an otter- must ask DH". (though why one would keep an otter in a box i dont know).

really love the bookends idea, I think it is fantastic, and love the whole thing of giving a gift that signals ongoing love and thought and time (in reading together etc) and is symbolic in itself (rather than materialistic).

thanks v much - excellent stuff.

MrsHP where did you get your bookends?

I got them from here and have ordered loads from them for presents. I usually ring them up and they are so very helpful on the phone. I was a bit late in ordering something once and they managed to get it done and sent it out really fast for me so would definitely recommend them. Hope you find something you like!

For the religious item, a nice crucifix to go in his room? There are lots of lovely books out there. I think DD got a proper bible and children's bible; a book with the main stories in it; some books with prayers, stories or concepts that she can read in church when she's little; also a book with the biblical story of her name (since she has a name from the bible).

She also got jewellery, silver cutlery etc.

We got our nephew a tankard for when he's older, but that was following a tradition we started by getting his older sisters a wine glass each (started with Bristol blue but with 6 of them we ran out of special colours!)
