the first one is nearly full.

Anyone welcome, it's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

I hate it when they do that, Mary - it drives me mad looking for things I know were there before!
tidying up is one thing, but don't move things or chuck them away just because you don't know what they are! (or, after the Wednesday morning service, don't remove all the BCPs from the choir stalls just because you've had a service in there! we need those for evensong, and that's where they live !)

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 11:28

Last year(or the year before?) (on Maundy Thursday), our lady priest organised a Last Supper, and we had food and drink, and a bit of feet washing (bleurgh), and a bit of a talk about what it all meant.
it was lovely, but we probably won't do it again now. :(

madhairday · 09/03/2011 11:28

I'm probably going to an Ash Wednesday service tonight - full on tradition with ashing and all that. It's not really been my cup of tea so to speak but went last year and there was something about it, I felt so close to God, I like to explore different traditions and spiritualities.

there's something about meditating in silence Wink

madhairday · 09/03/2011 12:07

Yes, and my church of the future will have a balance of the all out joy, the meditating in silence, the penitence, the awe, the kneeling, the weeping, the praising, the loving.

Don't have much ambition me Grin

thanksamillion · 09/03/2011 12:20

Oooh can I come to your church MHD? I love the variety and definitely find that worshipping in different ways reminds me of the different aspects of God and the mystery. > Grin

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 12:21

I like mhd's idea, but not all io nthe same service.
I think it's important to keep the same mood all the way through.
and i want heating.

Our Agape is the normal Holy Communion service with a few less hymns, and a "3 course meal" interspersed with it. All done sat the a table in the hall. Usually soup for starters, buffet type food for "mains" and "desert". Communion is passed to each other around the table with a proper loaf of bread rather than those nasty wafers. It's really lovely.

sounds lovely.
I like the way you use proper bread, just like it would have been done!

madhairday · 09/03/2011 13:52

Like the sound of that Baroque :)

Yes nickel not all in the same service, might be trying to do too much at a time, in our contemporary worship service we generally keep some kind of theme or mood.

Heating is a must too, too little of it in our present place Grin

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 14:11

we have the option of keepign the heating running for longer, but it would mean a) the bill would go up and b) the organ would be knackered. (organs can't take too much dry air, and when the heating's on, the air dries out)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 09/03/2011 14:11

It is really lovely - the combination of the fellowship with the communion is really though provoking actually. As although Jesus knew it was to be his last there must also have been general talk as among friends - and so you get that during the 3 courses of the meal, and then the the reminder of what was to happen during the sevice part. iykwim?

I'm a rebel. Turned the heating on at church at 9am, for the 12am service. Its generally only heated at weekends now, to save money. But I am NOT going to apologise, I'm going to do my "I'm the only minister in the village" flounce and insist that elderly people need more than pillar mounted heaters to keep them warm! Angry Blush

Last week, people really suffered with the cold, in spite of those heaters!

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 14:16

hmm.
(just got a prick of tears then.)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 09/03/2011 14:26

oh I am Envy MaryBS - our church heating needs to be switched on at least 12hrs in advance of heat being required.........longer when it's really cold for it to have an effect!

OP posts:
nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 14:32

(my prick of tears was for B's communion, not for Mary's heating - think there was a x-post!)

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 14:33

and Envy face from me, too - our heating takes a long time to heat up.
I think we have to put it on the night before for sunday services.

I often have a prick of tears when I come out too -

Also {envy] about the heating, ours takes forever and costs a fortune, it's a nightmare. I can't stand the cold due to the old lungs so have to be really careful43.

I hate those nasty little wafers too, keep trying to convince our vicar to use bread, Jesus didn't break paper in half after all.

madhairday · 09/03/2011 15:02
Envy

and no idea where the random 43 came from

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 15:03

i'm used to the wafers.
to me, they're traditional.

although, i do believe that once our stash has run out, they are reviewing it.
(that means it'll get knocked out because all the old dears don't like change)

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 15:04

(thoguht you were saying your age.... Wink)

MaryBS · 09/03/2011 15:05

Ours takes a long time to warm up too - but it took the chill off the place, which was DEFINITELY needed!

madhairday · 09/03/2011 15:05

hehehe, not quite
