the first one is nearly full.

Anyone welcome, it's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

ahhh - yes may try that - am just doing my Windows updates and will try the latest upgrade see if that makes a difference. Very annoying as I was getting close to being able to finish it today.

Was taking snapshots absolutely fine earlier - then it just threw a wobbly at me Hmm. There are loads of (differently named - but all the same one) files in the folder - but none "showing" just error filled.

I save very very often as I don't trust any of the DS's not to come along and do something to it when I'm not concentrating lol

I went "off piste" church-wise today, and had a very interesting (and occasionally dull) sermon on the KJV. Learnt quite a lot!

Things still bad elsewhere

BetsyBoop · 27/02/2011 20:56

I was giggling in Church today as we had a HOHB moment - we had "Stand up Stand up for Jesus" as one of the hymns, half the congregation were quite merrily singing the proper version "ye soliders of the cross" and the other half following the HOHB Kevin Mayhew version "stand up before the cross" and both halves looking bemused at the other half Grin

thanksamillion - I struggle with fasting too, if I don't eat regularly I get terrible headaches & it can often trigger migraines too. :(
I am wondering about just having fruit for lunch during Lent, rather than skipping lunch (as I know I will struggle) more of a "cleansing" than a fasting, but not sure if there is any point in doing that?

essenceofSES · 27/02/2011 21:20

Fasting - I don't normally completely fast but have days when I try to eat more simply and without any luxuries. This is normally on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. I find it helps me to stay more focussed on particular aspects of my faith; eg: Christ's suffering, those others in the world in greater need than I.

Baroque - I love the sound of CSI Jerusalem!

DH has flown off to Ireland today for the funeral. Things happen quickly over there so it is tomorrow. MIL is taking it all quite badly.

Church this morning was good. I can't remember who was talking about song as a form of prayer (I think a few of you) but that's definitely a good form of prayer for me - especially when I'm trying to keep 21mo DS involved!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 27/02/2011 21:28

our Vicar likes to encourage us to take something up during Lent rather than give up anything - so perhaps prayer, reading (we have a lent book), or something else related to God's work.

OP posts:
BetsyBoop · 27/02/2011 22:39

I agree - I always like to try & do more of something positive aa well as doing less of something not so positive in Lent. :)

essenceofSES · 27/02/2011 22:42

This may sound a bit contradictory, but I find that fasting (doing less) enables me to focus more on my faith (doing more).
We also have specific services, small groups and an encouragement to private acts of charity.

TotallyUnheardOf · 27/02/2011 23:28

Baroque... Did you have 'All creatures of our God and King'? So did we!

And I did snigger slightly when the priest complimented the lector on taking us through the OT reading 'at quite a lick'. Possibly not quite the point, though it was extraordinarily long!

On the other hand, I was really touched by today's gospel. I had been feeling very panicky about things completely outside my control (some old phobias rearing their ugly heads, blah blah boring boring) and came out of church feeling just reassured and full of peace. (I actually feel quite emotional again now, thinking about it. It was really like a weight being lifted.) I want to get a picture of some lilies to put up in my office, to remind me to 'consider the lilies of the field' and to trust in God when I start to panic.

thanksamillion - I'm glad you got to see your friend. I am a bit of a wuss about driving in snow, though I got a bit braver in the course of December in the US, when it didn't stop snowing the whole month. They were pretty good at keeping main routes clear, though.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/02/2011 07:25

ooooo - did we have the same readings I wonder - don't worry about anything - our OT was exceptionally long as well - though thankfully the person who read that reading has a lovely voice that you can listen to for ages.

And yes - we did have All creatures of our God and King - lovely hymn - but it does go on a little Grin

Hi Ladies,

Just reading through and reading about your fasting. I have to admit I am terrible at this. I know some people from our church do it on a regular basis, not sure how i feel about that. - I think it is more the "Oh we cant organise that for .......day, because I always fast and pray then and wont be available to help" Isnt it supposed to be between you and God and nobody else??

A few times I have felt I have been challenged by God to do it. One time was when a lovely friend of mine was diagnosed with a brain tumour and had been given 3 months to live. After fasting and praying for her we had a total sense of peace about the future. She lived for a further 18 months, saw all her DCs married and met her first grandchild. SHe was a lovely lady of God and a prayer warrior herself. She was only "ill" in the end for the last 12 hours of her life. She died with all her family around her. So many prayers were answered during that 18 month period.
Sorry, a bit of a ramble and going off point.

Right, have a good day ladies. Smile

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/02/2011 09:09

well update on my PD9 issues - I've isolated the problem to where I have multiple video track layers playing at the same time - for some reason it just doesn't want to let me save those point sin the video as a screen shot. Tried other points with 2 or less video tracks and it works so having to do the long comlicated workaround - grr

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:21

we don't do the Old testament reading anymore - DH raised it with the church warden, but she didn't seem keen (probably because the readers' list is already done till summer! Grin )
the music he picks reflects all the morning's readings, though, so we sometimes get hymns that don't seem to fit with the readings, but it's because they might fit with the psalm or the old testament reading.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/02/2011 10:24

well I don't know what's going on with my PD - I'm wondering if something has corrupted in the timeline/file when I saved it at some point as past a certain point when I work on it crashes- before that it doesn't.

It's not crashing when I play around with any of my other projects though.

Think I may start a new one and see if that makes any difference....will mean getting all my timings and everything sorted out again though

nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:24

oh yeah Betsy - KM with his "oh, we don't like to talk about soldiers and war etc when we're talking about jesus" (so let's forget about the centuries of fighting that Christians throughout the world have done just for the right to be christians), so Soldiers of the cross has gone, it's onward christian pilgrims Confused
but! they've left Figth the Good Fight! ConfusedConfused

that book drives me mad !

nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:26

all the hymns on sunday were long ones -
we had All Creatures (like you all did), How Great Thou art, Thou whose almighty word, and O Worship the king!
we weren't there, so i don't care how long they took! Grin Shock

MaryBS · 28/02/2011 10:31

Am looking forward to discussing yesterday's gospel reading at today's house group! Very relevant to me at the moment!

nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:33

last week, we had Holy Holy Holy, lord god almighty, and in the original words it says "though the eyes of sinful man"
in the Hideous book, it says "though the eyes made blind by sin"
except it says that in the words only and the full music - in the edition that is top line only it's got something closer to the A&M version - something like "though our sinful eyes" or something (can't remember now!)
so, all the ladies were singing different words!
that's good editting, isn't it! Shock

weird you're having problems with PD0, B - i've been having problems saving mp4s. that video of Ave Verum crackles up at hte end - it's saved like that on the computer, so i don't know what happened there.
I'm worried it's done it elsewhere too....
I'm going to see if there's a patch...

nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:33

PD9 i meant....

nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:34

I feel very out of the loop now!
i only know what music we had, cos i was at practice on friday, i've no idea what the readings were! Blush

we did lie in bed at mum and dad's on sunday morning going "oh, they'll be doing such-and-such now" and Blush singing along to various parts of the service we imagined they'd be at. Blush

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/02/2011 10:36

yes - it's very odd - I'm wondering if I've done something and confused it.........am starting over having saved all my Pip motions and effects as I customised them (I hope!) to put in again.

very frustrating though as I was 1/2 way through >

Still I suppose I shouldn't complain - have used it a lot since I got it (and used the trial version of PD7 before that) and this is the first issue I've had with it.

Hopefully was a corrupted something or other in the saved project and a new one will work........

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 10:41

that's what i hoped.
i produced it again but haven't had time to check it...

TotallyUnheardOf · 28/02/2011 11:52

Nickel... Surely the 'fight' in 'Fight the good fight' is metaphorical, though...? Mind you, I suppose it is in those other hymns too; but there the imagery of warfare - and of warfare waged against others in a fairly overt way - is much more explicit. I can't say that I am overly comfortable with it, myself, tbh, though I think I'd probably choose a different hymn altogether rather than messing with the words. I admit, though, to being generally in favour of political correctness, insofar as thinking a bit more carefully about how we use language (which is such a powerful - ha ha, nearly wrote 'weapon', keeping the war imagery, but let's say 'tool' and keep it neutral) costs nothing except a bit of mental effort (which is a good thing) and can make a big difference to how our message is perceived. And this is surely relevant to us as Christians, in that we ought to try to live and speak our faith in a way that makes us an example to others - to as many others as possible, that is. So it is surely important to speak as inclusively as possible.

Probably overthinking this, mind... These hymns were my favourites as a child.

Mary - hope your house group goes well. I am still thinking about the lilies of the field! And I am also trying to hold onto the idea that 'sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof' (or whatever it is in modern English - I like this in the KJV), and that I should not spend half of today rehearsing, replaying and worrying about yesterday's (or last week's, or whatever...) issues. I hope you find some peace, Mary.

TotallyUnheardOf · 28/02/2011 12:01

Oh... no excuse for inconsistency, though! [Stern editor voice!]

Was just looking for something else, and stumbled upon 1 Corinthians 14 on using language for the good of the community (if it's not too presumptuous to invoke St Paul in support of my previous post). I am also very interested (for work reasons) in the story of the Tower of Babel - the way in which mutual incomprehension is both a punishment in itself and a punishment in the way in which it destroys the community (the ability to cooperate) of the builders of the tower, who are no longer able to function as a community when they can no longer understand one another.

Anyway... I am digressing quite massively here, sorry!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 28/02/2011 12:06

thing is if you think of "onward Christian soliders"..(for example)

What about the armour of faith? That is to take us to war - but not in a literal sense - so until the day they take out the bit in the bible at armour of faith then I'll happily sing the songs about "war".

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 28/02/2011 12:10

TUO - but so are the Christian Soldiers marching as to war, and so are the Soldiers of the Cross in lift high the cross.
that's why it makes no sense at all to take away that fighting, but not the other fighting.

"I can't say that I am overly comfortable with it, myself, tbh, though I think I'd probably choose a different hymn altogether rather than messing with the words."
that's the main issue we have with the Hideous book - it does mess around with the words, and usually unnecessarily so. We all know that the hymn isn't telling us to go out and actually fight with non-christians!

the other hymn i just remembered they left in tact, was Soldiers of Christ arise and put your armour on!
Hmm

it's not consistatn, and it probably wouldn't be so bad if they'd messed with hymns that people didn't know off by heart ! Grin
