what happens at a spiritualist church?

My friend and I are thinking of visiting our local spiritualist church but I wondered if anyone could give us an idea of what happens at an 'open night' - which they have each week?

We are regular church goers - so quite comfortable with prayers and hymns etc but would like an idea of what kind of service would we find?

Thanks

IME there is an opening 'talk' or presentation from the church organiser, and then perhaps an address by the guest medium. They explain that they will bring through messages and ask that if they approach a member in the 'audience', would it be OK to give the message?
It can be very interesting to listen to the messages and how they are received by people.
Sometimes there is then a break, with a coffee etc and then they may offer a healing
service whereby, everyone sits in quiet and people who wish to receive healing are invited to approach an empty chair, and receive the healing being offered.
Sometimes there are prayers and hymns, sometimes not.

I am going to one tomorrow so will let you know how it goes :)

It depends on the church. They don't all have hymns as some realise that not everyone is Christian and are more 'interfaith'. Do they have a website?

Open night most likely is the chance for mediums or trainee mediums to provide evidence of the other side ..as Indigobarbie says. If there are a lot of people there, don't count on getting a message. I was lucky to go to mine recently with only a few people in audience so got a few messages. Though mine does also try and encourage people to channel themselves too ie see if they can connect to spirit in order to help someone in the audience ( i dont think this is common though! i was put on the spot like this last week, luckily have done platform myself years ago)
Really it does depend on that particular church though..

Nobody who attends a Spiritualist "church" is a Christian.

Are you Jesus? If not sit down and be quiet.

No but I am one of His earthly representatives. Do you have an issue with what I said?

@Besidetheprompromprom well spotted ... so it is! I didn't look at the dates. I wonder what made Calvert1984 find it and resurrect it after 13 years?!

Besidetheprompromprom · 02/06/2024 11:11

Indeed @Thegreatestoftheseislove I wondered the same thing myself...

Weeeelll, I guess there's no law against it, but I'm intrigued as to what prompts somebody to go searching for, and resurrecting, ancient threads. Perhaps a 'spirit' told 'em to do it? LOL. As my old granny used to say 'nowt so strange as folk'. Still, @Besidetheprompromprom , it has given an opportunity to share what the Bible has to say on the matter. 🙂

Sure I do; there are Christian Spiritualists, some of the most famous were Arthur Conan-Doyle, Queen Victoria , Thomas Edison, Lewis Carroll, Rudyard Kipling, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

It's not your place to patrol those who wish to practice Christian Spiritualism

Christian spiritualism not only embraces spiritualism as I have described but also brings Jesus into our lives. We believe that the stories of Jesus teach us how to lead our lives. Love one another, forgive those who hurt us, do not judge, be humble and compassionate. The most important of these is love. Love your neighbour as yourself whatever their colour or creed.

Great minds think alike @Thegreatestoftheseislove 😉

Ah, that old chestnut @Sorciere1 In the words of our Apostle Paul, "will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?"

I'm ethnically Jewish and a polytheist, a live and let live kind of girl.

But your narrow-minded prejudice has me bringing out the big guns.

The famous and ancient Jewish rabbis of the Talmud describe Jesus as a sorcerer (!) an idolater(!)
The Talmud is the central text of Rabbinic Judaism and the primary source of Jewish religious law (halakha) and Jewish theology.[1][2] Until the advent of modernity, in nearly all Jewish communities, the Talmud was the centerpiece of Jewish cultural life and was foundational to "all Jewish thought and aspirations", serving also as "the guide for the daily life" of Jews.[3]
Wikipedia
We were here first so of course our understanding prevails (yes, I'm being ironic)

The Talmudic stories make fun of Jesus’ birth from a virgin, fervently contest his claim to be the Messiah and Son of God, and maintain that he was rightfully executed as a blasphemer and idolater. They subvert the Christian idea of Jesus’ resurrection and insist he got the punishment he deserved in hell—and that a similar fate awaits his followers.

So you have zero basis to critique Christian Spiritualists.
