Seeking materials written in English for RC baptism and communion rites (for children over 7 years)

Hello

I'm helping at my local RC church (mainland Europe) with communion and baptism preparation classes. My role is to help the expat English-speaking children of the parish and their parents understand the preparation literature we have that's written in French.

We have 4 English speakers making their first communion and 2 English speakers over 7 yrs who are going to be baptised.

Although I've translated the relevant materials to the best of my ability, I would dearly love to get my hands on some preparation materials originally published in English, in case I have made any howlers!

Does anyone know where I might get my hands on these please? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Any Catholics out there who can help please?

Sorry, realise should have put 'preparation' materials in title.

I MAY be able to help, and it might help me too, I'll have a look around and see what I can find. Interestingly enough, I helped prepare my SN son for communion and I've got to make a pastoral visit to a family who would their child baptized.

I'm not RC though, but Anglican (although I used to be RC)

Loyola Press, which is a RC website, offers this material:

Baptism

Communion

Thank you very much for your help and for the links MyrrhyBS!! It is much appreciated!

I think what I am after specifically (and what may be helpful for you - if the child you are visiting is over the age of seven) is the RCIC (the rite of Christian Initiation of Children)

It is a variation of the R.C.I.A. which stands for the "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" and is a programme of the Catholic Church for adults and mature teenagers, oriented towards those who are searching and inquiring about the Catholic way of life.

That's what it is called in the Catholic church anyway but I'm uncertain about Anglican equivalents! Smile

I'll put the feelers out, see what I can find. I am familiar with the RCIA. Its a baby being baptized, what I am looking for is more to explain it for the parents.

As for the Anglican equivalent, there is no standard theology on the sacraments, let alone documents on how to explain it! :)

... This may be what you are looking for

Thank you so much for that link MyrrhyBS!! It is incredibly helpful and puts me right on track...

I hope you find what you are looking for too!! (It sounds a bit more complicated in the CofE - us left-footers just have to find the all too standardised rules and regs!!) Smile

Thanks again!

You're welcome :)

I'm always in 2 minds whether to reply on these threads as strictly speaking, no longer RC, but glad I could help!

I can't help with resources, I'm afraid. There are plenty of books, DVDs etc out there, but the youngest I have ever taught is confirmation so I couldn't tell you which ones are any good.

Pauline Books and media have some good resouces, generally.

However, I have catechised French children before (and have lived in France), so if you want someone to check your translations, I'd be happy to.

crypticplumage · 22/01/2011 18:26

Thank you very much indeed for the link Fink (it looks very useful) and thanks also for the pointer about DVDs. I'll investigate!
A third thank you for offering to check my translation which is much appreciated but I have people here who can do that.

I just wanted to get hold of the English texts in their original form - as I would feel happier working from them rather than a translation - and then teachin/explaining in French - but I didn't express that very well in my op!

Thanks again to you too MyrrhyBS

I will see if there is anything I can get at Mass tomorrow if that would help?

crypticplumage · 22/01/2011 19:03

That would be great if not too much trouble! Thanks KenDDD!

I was coming to the conclusion that it might be best if I approach a church in the UK - so you are doing it for me!! Even just an idea of where they can be found would be helpful, if not the actual documents themselves.

Thank you again!

Hi. Have just seen your post.
I prepare children for FHC and we use a lovely book, costing £7.50 called 'I belong' available from McCrimmons here:

www.mccrimmons.com/product/219/933

It is a very attractive hardback book to keep and treasure once the children have filled it in. There are also teacher's and parents' books.

The website RE Quest has lots of useful stuff on to look at with children or you could tell parents to look at it at home.

Good luck!

Hello Greenwing,

I've sent you a pm!

Thank you so much for posting those links and for the book recommendation.

The McCrimmon website looks particularly useful.

Thanks to everyone's help here, my English language Baptismal resource pack is thickening up quite nicely!

Thanks again!
