Hoping one of you lovely Muslim ladies on here can shed some light on this.

Briefly, DH and I have been married for 8 years and have 2 primary school age dds. He is generally kind, tolerant and respectful of everyone and a pretty relaxed person.

He is Muslim and he's quite happy for me not to be. Recently since this Ramadan he has been listening to some tapes that he says explains the Quran in more detail to him.

Last night we were talking and he said a few things about Jewish people that really shocked me. Now I am very aware about the Middle East problems, but he was saying that there is alot written in the Quran about the Jews and it is ALL true because the Quran is the word of God. I got angry because I have been brought up to respect everyone regardless of their religion. Our dds are Muslim and I DO NOT want them to be taught that a certain group of people are not nice or can't be trusted or whatever. It seems insane that in this day and age people still think like that! I feel quite upset actually, it is very important to me that my girls grow up tolerant of all others.

Any thoughts would be gratefully read Smile

The Quran says both nice and nasty things about Jews. There's a brief overview here.

As with most religious books, there's enough ambiguity and contradiction in the Quran to allow you to pick and choose verses to support pretty much any position you wish to defend.

Thanks for this, I will read it.

the whole idea with reading the quran is how you interpret it, if you want to believe nice things about jews youl find lines to support this. You have to think about the times that muhammad was around though and without being blasphamos whether or not any of stuff that was going on around this time could have possible even a little bit contributed to the midset of those who were recalling quranic verses. now im going to hide before people throw stuff at me

Yes, nordic I can see where you are coming from.

What do you mean recalling the verses?

Depends on your interpretation. What I was taught was that the tribe of Israel kept getting sent more prophets than any other tribe, because they were notorious for either killing the prophets or for regressing back to their pagan ways after adopting their religion. I don't remember any detailed description of the character of Jews per say; but in the Arab world (possibly even beyond) they are thought to be shrewd, good businessmen, put themselves above all others, etc etc. I think even a Shakespearian play highlighted some of these characteristics.

IMO, reputations like that don't spring out of nowhere. But it's not necessarily all negative. Some of my closest friends are Jewish and I think it's amazing how they pull together and help each other and succeed in business (it is a generalisation).

Best thing to do OP, is get yourself a version of the Quran that has the text directly translated into English on each page. Read it for yourself and make your own judgements.

Thanks, Suzihaha, I do have a copy translated into English already so I will check it out.
