Oh dear, just got back from a week away to find that one of the cats has not been seen by the neighbours or the friend feeding her since Tuesday. Apparently she has been trying to get into neighbours houses and hanging about looking for attention but has now disappeared.

I feel v.bad as i took the decision not to put the cats in the cattery, thought they would be happier at home (I had a cat as a child that didn't eat for two weeks in a cattery and another who ran away never to be seen again after a "holiday" at the cattery).

The children will never want to go away again.

Tell me you have a cat who went off in the huff but came back later...hanging on to hope emoticon...

When I was younger our cat disappeared just after Christmas. We were convinced she had gone for ever. After some time longer than a week (but probably shorter than two) we heard a mewing outside the front door and there she was .

Thinner and very dirty but fine.

We think she had got into somewhere, got locked in and then was found. She would have come round the back of the house so think the person who found her saw her address and dropped her round.

Hope your cat is back soon.

My sister's cat turned up after having been missing for 4 weeks!!

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 08/07/2010 20:15

We emigrated to the USA in December one year. The cat went a bit before us and stayed in a kennel in the UK for a week or so before flying out.

She was delivered to our new house the day she arrived in the US and seemed happy to see us and fairly normal.

She was used to going outside, so we let her and promptly disappeared. We thought that was that.

It snowed and was subzero temperatures.

Then, about a week later, we heard miaowing as we were going to bed. Sure enough, it was our cat, returning from our adventure. How she knew where to come, I have no idea, as she had literally been in our house for an hour.

I heard someone in the newsagents on Sunday say that her cat had just come home after 10 weeks!

Lizcat · 08/07/2010 21:56

Only about 3 weeks ago I returned a cat to an owner that had been missing for 6 months.

Thanks everyone, I am not very optimistic actually but am acting as if I am for the children's sake. Off to do a leafletting run of the streets nearby to ask people to check their sheds.

My cat has been missing for almost a year now.
Last seen on 29th July 2009. I think he ran away as a few weeks before he had been in the cattery for 2 weeks with our other cat (which he put up with) and when he disapeared he saw us taking out the tent trailer and to him that meant...Cattery!
He is chipped, just hope he does turn up one day

Hello - DP's rather elderly cat came to live with us at Christmas (DP doesn't live with us)

Anyway, she settled really well, then started doing vanishing acts for up to 2 weeks, one time I had actually just finished walking round the village putting up missing posters when she pitched up at the back door - she'd been away 10 days!

She did another week away and one stretch of a fortnight, came back thinner but content enough each time.

Hope you find yours

Yes, do ask people to check garages, outbuildings, etc & even shut up rooms in the house & loft as if it has been warm windows & doors will have been left open.
The cat could also have got into a vehicle & driven somewhere but if microchipped then she could well be picked up but it might take a while to sort out.
Heaven forbid but if you should get no news it is best to think of the cat having been adopted by some new owners nearby & being spoilt rotten, which could well be the case & it is totally feasible - there have been reports of cats having gone missing only to be living with another family in the next street. Cats are very resilient so hoping she turns up soon.

Ripeberry, that is exactly what my childhood cat did, scarperred for good as soon as he saw suitcases in the hall. We were away in our folding camper, the missing cat nearly stowed away when I was packing it last week! Really regretting not getting round to getting the cats chipped now.

Yes, my then 1.5yr old cat went missing in May a couple of years ago; we searched high and low, put flyers up in the local shop, on lamp-posts, in the pubs and went door-to-door asking people to check their sheds and garages.

I was gutted and so worried, but on the 5th day at about 2am, she came back of her own accord; meowing like a mad thing, starving hungry but very, very clean... We think she was probably locked in a shed or even a car.

No-one ever owned up to 'finding' or releasing her, but some folk now still know us because of all those door-to-door trawls

whywhywhydelilah · 09/07/2010 12:37

Hi there my cat went missing for nearly 2 weeks last year, she got in a huff I think because we had a friend and his dog come to live with us for a bit. She had never been outside before because of the road we lived on so was not used to other aniamls especially big scary dogs. So the first chance she got she escaped and didnt come back.

I think I made more than 1000 leaflets with her picture and our number and posted them through the doors of everyone within a half mile radius of my house put posters up literaly everywhere to no avail.

I was so worried about her and really resigned myself to the fact that she got totally lost and confused probably dead and never comming back. I cried every day and then one evening she just walked back in through a window as if nothing had happened looked a bit skinny but that was it!

Everyone had told me not to worry how cats just disapear and then reapear just walking down the garden path and I didnt believe this would happen but it did! So dont give up hope more often then not they come back I think.

Update for everyone who kindly answered my post; Jasmine has been found! she had crossed the main street and then been unable to get back over and taken refuge in someone else's house last night. |Luckily I dropped in to the local hairdressers this afternoon (they do all the mature ladies hair in the village) and they located her in a few hours! I will take them a treat tommorrow. I have felt like I was in an episode of "Without a Trace", doing a timeline of the last sightings on Tuesday and now i feel I need a stiff drink.

I will also be buying a collar and booking a microchip appointment.

Mums cat disappeared for 4 months - came back at 5am on mothers day - she rang me shreiking down the fone

Friends cats (bro+sis) disappeared years ago... They turned up 18 months later together

Mum has 4 cats, replacing ones that have gone missing over the years. I often wonder what would happen if they all turned up

Saladbomb · 10/07/2010 09:49

so glad your cat has returned. I know how worrying it is! they do go off in a huff sometimes. a few years ago DH and i went traveling for a few months so we rented our house to a couple of friends who were also supposed to look after our cat. unfortunately, they split up about 8 weeks before we returned and then weren't actually at the house much although they did make sure he was fed regularly. by the time we returned he had understandably taken to going round a few other neighbours houses and we wouldn't see him for weeks at a time. we gradually coaxed him back into a more settled lifestyle (this involved a few words with neigbours about feeding him in their houses) but a few times when we have left him he went back to his wandering ways. ever since then i have ALWAYS but him in a cattery. i would rather he goes to "borstal" as we call it than think we had abandoned him and he is always super clingy when we get him back. Ask for recommendations from friends or the vet to find a good one, if they are any good they will let you inspect the place your cat will be staying and wont mind you asking as many questions as you like.

my other cat disappeared when she was 17 for about a week, (obviously we thought the worst!) she turned up 14miles away in Makro carpark! We think she must have got in a van or maybe fallen asleep under the bonnet of a car and had the good sense not to jump out until it stopped. crazy!
