How to stop a rabbit thumping or at least deadening the noise?

We have 2 rabbits, boy and girl, who live in the same hutch. Boy is neutered.

Since day one that we got him he thumps when in the hutch.

If at night there is any wildlife he thumps all night long.

Today the neighbours came round to complain that the rabbit's thumping is keeping them awake.

How can I either stop him thumping, or deaden the noise so that it's not disturbing the neighbourhood?

Does covering the front of the hutch with someting like a piece of sacking stop him. He's telling everyone to be alert for danger so if he can't see it this might stop him. Otherwise putting something solid under the floor of the hutch will help cut down the din.

Oh the sack's a good idea - why are the simple ideas the best and the ones I never think of

I'll give that a go first.

Thanks.

could you give him more space to run around (whilst still being safe?) i am thinking something like a large run, with his hutch in there but on the floor (to deaden the thumping noise)?

My female (house) rabbit is a bit of a thumper, but is fine when she is out and about (like I say, in the house so a bit safer) and even when she has a pady, like tonight cos it's bedtime and she's in her cage, it's not too bad cos the cage is on the floor?

They have a very large run for during the day, although he's not keen on coming out, and prefers to sit in his hutch, although I do get him out every day. (although you may have seen my thread of a few days ago, when he went off on an adventure )

Without spending lots of money, I can't think of a safe way due to lots of foxes and cats in the area to have the hutch on the ground, and out in the run at night.

BTW he thumps when he's out in the run, but that's on grass and during the day so you can ignore it.

He thumps over everything - if the girl ignores him, he thumps until she goes to groom him, if she grooms him for too long he thumps, if you give him treats to eat he thumps, if she eats treats he thumps, if he's eating and she's not he thumps. He likes to thump!!!
