me and dp are going to get preferably 2 dogs when we move next year. I will get a greyhound/whippet but he would like an alsatian. i love them too and that is fine with me but will these two breeds be ok together?

we'd get the alsatian from a puppy hopefully so the dogs would grow up being together.

do you think this would be ok for both dogs involved?

There's no reason why dogs of different breeds shouldn't get along.

Why are you getting 2 dogs?

I see no reason why not.

If it were me I would get the sighthound first, as they are likely to happily accept another dog onto 'their' territory, as opposed to a GSD, which would still probably be fine but being a guarding breed, is the one more likely to not enjoy a newcomer.

Don't get them both as puppies at the same time though, it is a receipe for disaster.

I've never seen problems between Alsatians/GSDs and Greyhounds. I fostered a Greyhound alongside my own Shep and the two were great friends, chasing each other and playing like mad before snoozing together. Equally local rescue has both breeds, with 2 Sheps sharing the house with 2 Greys, 2 Lurchers and 9 other dogs. They all get on very well considering that they were all introduced to the established pack individually as they came into rescue.

Traditionally Greys are considered to be highly strung/nervy and Sheps bold and courageous so I guess that the two are a good mix. Of course that's only the stereotype, each dog is different, so you have to judge on a case by case basis in reality. My one concern would be having an adult/adolescent Grey and a pup of any kind, just in case the Grey viewed the pup as prey. That aside, I can't think of any real difficulties. In fact I'm quite jealous of you now!

HTH.

I know a few greyhounds that live with GSDs with no problems although they do tend to ignore the more boisterious playing :D

thanks guys for the responses you have put my mind at ease. it wont be this year as we need to move first so i can do lots of research plus our house is too small for a dog at the moment

we want two so they have company plus ive just always liked the idea of 2! i cant wait. i think about it every day! how sad is that!!
