How do you toddler proof with a dog in house?

Dog is very gentle ( as good as Lassie himself)but 5 stone, but I have been so worried about it all I have currently sent him away. DD is 1 and crawling /cruising fast. Its just that I have awful visions of what could happen in worst case scenario. (In fact my dog bit me as a child and got put to sleep) Do I need to supervise constantly / not let her out of vision? Do I need to lock dog in separate room? What do other, but non anxious people do?, thank you.

Poor dog....I would be sensible about supervision...don't leave them alone together when the toddler is still at the pulling dogs ears stage. Encourage gentle behaviour by the child also.

I supervise. But I am not overly obsessive about it, if dd2 is watching tv and the dog is sleeping on sofa, I will leave the room for short periods of time, rather than disturbing either of them, but I keep coming in and checking on them.

If the dog is awake, he tends to hang around me anyway, just in case I do something interesting like open the fridge

Both dds have been taught to be gentle with the dog and never to approach him while he is sleeping/resting and never take his toys from him or go near him when he has a bone or treat.

Supervision and stairgates across doors, so the dog and toddler can be separated.

Agree, lots of supervision and Baby gates are great. I have 6 dogs, 4 very large ones and DD was fine, the dogs mainly avoided her when she was a todler.
Although, I have always had dogs and it seems to be second nature to keep them and children apart when crawling and toddling.
