Does anyone have any experience with mites in their dog? Lola is so sad..

Lola has mites, she is an 8 month old SBT absolutely beautiful (pic on profile) well normally!
She is now completely bald on her face, and since we did her first wash in the medication it has gotten worse
She has now got patches all over her back, under her chin is bald, she has scratched to the point of drawing blood in some places the poor thing.

I have spoken to the vet again today who said that it may well get worse before it gets better etc, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how long it took to treat? Will it go completely in the end? And will she ever look her beautiful self again?

TIA

Has the vet given you any other medication for her? Apart from the washes it sounds like she might benefit from some antibiotics and maybe some anti-histamines too.

Most of these cases do respond to the washes and yes they look fabulous again - it takes time though. There will be a few however that respond ok and then it all recurs a few weeks later. If necessary ask to have her referred to a veterinary dermatologist in that case.

Chin up, as Beautifulgirls says, it DOES take time but the shampooy stuff does the trick in the end in most cases. My local rescue has taken in a couple of pound dogs which were in terrible states - a little boy with a short coat which wasn't even there in parts and a rough collie X girl with a bald face.

Both responded well although, as I said, it took a while. The collie X has gone on to find a new home and family and the little boy, a sweet, affectionate lad, is patiently waiting for someone to come and love him too.

Thanks for reply.

No she has just been prescribed the wash at the moment, we have done one and will be doing her again on Wednesday, she then has to go back the following Monday to be seen.

Its not easy to wash her in this stuff! She hates the water and is terrified afterwards, it seems a shame there is no jab they could administer to kill the mites through the blood stream!

I am pleased to hear that she should get her lovely coat back, she really has such a pretty face, its heartbreaking to see her looking so sore.

Just an update, I took Lola back to the vet yesterday as her eye seems to have become infected and she has some red raw patches on her chest

She is now on eye drops, piriton, and antibiotics as well as the Aludex wash!

I have informed her breeder and the vet has suggested claiming on Lolas insurance, all this treatment is getting pricy!

Im hoping its not my imagination, but she seems a little perkier today!

poor lola! and poor you - it is horrible to see them unhappy.

my staffy has skin problems, he has allergies that make him itch so he scratches himself raw. well, he tries to.....i put socks on him so he can't do so much damage!

anyway, i have tried everything to help relieve the itching and have just started looking into essential oils. tea tree can be dodgy for dogs so i'm steering clear of that but lavender is safe and is meant to soothe and heal, also good for preventing infection i think. roman chamomile is also meant to be very good for irritated skin. calendula oil is a good skin soothing carrier oil to use.

i would check with your vet before using any essential oils but it may be worth a try. seems to be helping our itchy boy....and he smells gorgeous as an added bonus.

lola is absolutely beautiful by the way! hope she is soon feeling much better.
