Daphne has a sore tongue and is in pain

She has not been eating over the past few days and we thought it was just the weather. Today she looks sad and tired and is just not herself.

I tried hand feeding her and she was not eating normally. She was not licking, more biting off my fingers (gently, carefully)

She was obviously in pain and was frightened of the bowls.

I looked in her mouth as I thought she had hurt a tooth. She has a long gash on the side of her tongue. No idea where she hurt herself.

She has eaten and drunk and seems to be a bit better. I will take her to the vet tomorrow and see what she says. But is there anything I can do tonight to help her?

Soft foods really - not a lot else you can do for now. What sort of animal is Daphne?

MmeLindt · 28/06/2010 22:31

Sorry. Should have said she is a dog, Maltese terrier.

She is a bit perkier now she has eaten. I gave her water through a syringe as she does not seem able to lick from the bowl. Poor darling.

Hope she gets on ok at the vets today.

Thanks, Beautifulgirls.

Found out what is wrong with her. The vet did not have an appointment free until 5.30pm so I had another look. There was a massive splinter lodged in her gums. It looks like it was a pencil, the kids are always leaving them lying around and it seems she chewed one.

I pulled it out and the area is still red and inflamed, so will take her to the vet and check if she needs antibiotics. She was able to lick, drink and eat alone though, and is looking much happier.

Ahh, my dog is always eating sticks - we think she managed to pierce some part of her mouth or gums recently too. Similar story, struggled to eat or open her mouth fully, wouldn't yawn, cheek swelled up to a massive tennis ball. Took her to the vet and got her pain killers and antibiotics and she was much better after a day or two.

She hasn't learned not to chew sticks though

Hope Daphne is okay.

aww poor thing - glad you found it and got it out. Hopefully the vet can reassure you from there.

MmeLindt · 29/06/2010 21:44

Thanks all.

Yes, you were right, Soozle. Antibiotics, painkillers and keep the dog away from sticks, pencils and other objects. She was playing with her stuffed hippo earlier, which she has not done for days.

The DC are going to tidy their playroom tomorrow as they are feeling sorry for Daphne and guilty that she was hurt as a result of them not tidying up.

Well thats a good result. Daphne is okay and the kids are going to tidy up! Brilliant

beautifulgirls · 30/06/2010 12:49

good news - wonder how long the new tidying up initiative will last LOL! I know it wouldn't in my house anyway.

kid · 30/06/2010 21:56

Who cares how long it will last, enjoy it while you can!

We are in the process of picking a new puppy. I might tell my kids we can only get him if the house is spotless
It would work, for about a day!

Thank heavens Daphne is on the mend. Poor mite, I bet it hurts.

My dogs, especially my GSD, are beggars for playing stick. All perfectly normal to me until we were staying at rescue to help out and the rescue owner saw him munching on one. He reeled off a list of injuries he'd seen caused by a dog chewing on a stick/getting it lodged in the mouth/piercing the roof, and politely but firmly warned me against it.

I still forget sometimes and my Shep doesn't understand of course so just grabs a stick, races about with it and munches away regardless but in view of the horror stories I heard that day do try to avoid stick games now.

Big hugs for Daphne.

Ha, I have found out what it was. Not a pencil as I first thought, but one of the cheap and nasty windmill things that MIL bought for the garden.

Sooo, I have a good excuse for binning them.
