My snow white Bichon Frise likes to play with coal..

HTH.

Pick your battles. They're worse than toddlers.

doggiesayswoof · 22/06/2010 19:39

Puppy nylabones

A bit pricey but vg and last for a long time.

I am a bit worried about rawhide (worry about choking, but I know some people use it)

the one rawhide thing I do use is a flat plate/frisbee shape, my pup finds that v satisfying and will work away for ages

You have two??? (Mind boggles)

doggiesayswoof · 22/06/2010 19:41

Had to hide laundry or a few weeks

Rope toys and cuddly toys no use (unless you are playing with them and they are not allowed to keep them) as our pup destroys them - basically eats them

doggiesayswoof · 22/06/2010 19:41

for a few weeks

misdee · 22/06/2010 19:58

they like my oven gloves

tbh i am finding them a joy and very lovely. its not been as bad as people have said [yet]

housebreaking is getting better, just 4 accidents today between them.

are those kongs any good?

will look at nylabones.

I wouldnt use nylabones, they get very sharp edges quickly and it can get stuck in the pups' throat. Not to mention how sore it is if you accidentally step on it!

I would use rawhide or kong type toys.

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 22/06/2010 20:06

Get big toys that don't fit under your sofa. Mine goes mental when he pushes it under and can't get it out again. I've been using rawhide shaped as shoes.

They seem to keep him happy for awhile.

Flum · 22/06/2010 22:02

What breed are they.

I put peanut butter or marmite inside a kong which keeps her busy for oooh about 5 minutes!

Have been told to freeze chicken stock in a kong and give that. Also put some doggy biscuits in an old milk plastic bottle and let em chew it out.

Ours is 14 week black lab and not gone mad chewing yet, but am expecting it.

misdee · 22/06/2010 22:35

they arent too mad with chewing, just like anything material i saw some puppy 'comforters' which i thought were odd at the time, but can see they might appeal to some pups.

they are labradoodles.

dont get that rawhind stuff (thinks its the same stuff, looks like pale thin dried skin) very dangerous for pups
Thorton has taken to chewing a old baby toy

RunforFun · 23/06/2010 00:17

I've ended up knotting a big sock together as its the only way I can get the washing done.

The Kong... well we only had it 2 minutes before its got hidden out in the hedge somewhere.

misdee · 23/06/2010 06:56

i dont want to give them old baby toys as they might then think any of sophs toys are fair game.

OP posts:
lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 23/06/2010 08:23

jaz doesnt play with baby toys, so not a problem here, but socks arent advised as they will then chew any scoks!

Madsometimes · 23/06/2010 11:56

My dog loves a pig's trotter that we got from pet shop. It cost 50p and has been far better value than any manufactured toys which tend to only last hours or days. The children are not too happy with him though, and the trotter does smell a little high.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/06/2010 13:16

They will be enjoying your things so much because they smell of you (which is comforting) and because when they take them you try to get them back (which is fun).

Kongs, Nylabones, Dog soft toys (please do NOT give child soft toys, someones dog on a forum I belong to died recently after ingesting the contents of a childs cuddly toy), any dog toy really are all good.

BUT you have to make the toy interesting they won't automatically know it is theirs, so play lots of games, act like you want the toy, throw it in the air a few times (while puppy is watching obv.) try to 'guard' it, hide it, find it, basically make it look like the most fun thing ever, this way it becomes a highly prized item for your puppy, and then praise, praise, praise whenever they are chewing it and also stop what you are doing and have a game with it and them, when they steal something they shouldn't take it away calmly and with out comment, then instantly offer one of their toy and have a game, they will soon learn. If you cannot get 'your' item away from them without chasing, then find one of their toys and begin playing with it they will soon lose interest in what they have.

It is very common to ignore puppies and dogs when they are convieniently doing the right thing, if you make a huge fuss of them, treat them and play with them every time you see them quietly chewing their own toys, then chances are they will do this more and more.

Sorry, that was it bit mamoth hope it helps

doggiesayswoof · 23/06/2010 13:21

Just to say on nylabones I have used them loads and have never ever had probs with sharp edges

Rawhide on the other hand can get sharp quickly

If you do the stuff wherethewildthingswere recommends, they will learn (eventually!) what are their toys and what's out of bounds

How old are they? 2 labradoodles, they must be gorgeous!

misdee · 23/06/2010 14:18

9 weeks.

gorgeous pups, but both v different

They will chew everything and anything they can get their teeth on. Jean Donaldson has it right when she says 'everything is a chew toy', it really is, dogs do not differentiate between what is 'theirs' to chew and anything else, until they are taught. The only way you will teach them not to chew thinsg they aren't supposed to is to simply not allow it to happen, so supervision and when you can't supervise making sure they cannot chew anything they aren't supposed to, by either crating them, using a puppy pen, or putting them in a puppy proofed room, but often rooms
don't work as they will then chew walls, skirting boards, kitchen cupboards etc.

A puppy pen or crate will also help with toilet training, the aim (and it does make it much easier/quicker to train) should be to never have an accident in the house at all, ever.

I am sure you know, but two puppies will be much harder than one, more than double the work. They need to spend twice as much time with you alone as they do with the other pup, otherwise they are always more interested in the other dog than you. Plus (and I am not sure if anyone has told you, apologies if you knew) same sex siblings can start to have problems when they mature, especially bitches. For these reasons, most responsible breeders won't home two puppies together.

misdee · 23/06/2010 15:54

they are 2 boys.

we crate train and house acxcidents are few and far between. just one boy seems to be persistant in weeing on the floor, the other seems to have cracked in.

they are lovely together, and seem very settled already.

we have tried to keep everything out o9f their reach, but just keep nabbing little things i miss.

they love old towels, is this ok to give them an old specific one to have?

they have time together and time apart in the evenings as they seem to nap at different times them.

they have learn to come when called, sit and starting on Stay
