The sad tale of Alicia, the disappearing guinea pig

DS1 has two guinea pigs - Alicia and Nibbles. They live outside in the summer in their hutch which is situated on top of their run. On returning home on Saturday we were [shocked] to discover that the wind had blown the hutch off the top of the run and the guineas had escaped. Cue general panic and tears. We apprehended Nibbles the following morning whilst he was sunbathing near the raised beds but Alicia is still at large in the garden. We live in a rural area and the garden is about 1.5 acres. I think she's unlikely to have gone far (she escaped last October and spent 2 nights in the woodpile before being discovered and repatriated). So the question is; does anyone have any tips to lure her out?

dandelion leaves
celery
watermelon

Anything sweet or with a strong smell might do it?

kid · 21/06/2010 22:36

they love parsley, mine did anyway!

Meglet · 21/06/2010 22:39

parsley = the crystal meth of the piggy world .

I used to have piggies that liked basil but my latest ones never took to it.

Summersoon · 22/06/2010 08:29

lol @ Meglet and crystal meth!!

Mine loves all of the above plus slices of canteloupe or Charentais melon - these have a stronger smell than watermelon so might do the trick! Good luck, hope you find her!

If you give dried food you could always try shaking the box/bag.

Mine get excited when they hear it!
(And they do have fresh as well btw!)

We had a guinea pig who escaped and ran into a field of alfalfa - I thought he had come to grief months later when the field was harvested but no! Cue return of a pig so fat it looked like a Jack Russell.

Thanks for all the advice. Crystal meth! Jack Russells! lol . Will try parsley and melon I think.

Alicia may have the body of a pig but she clearly has the heart of an adventurer - wish me luck.

"Born Free"

Have you caught her yet?

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 23/06/2010 08:32

Can't open you link Meglet

No haven't caught her yet. But am hopeful. Nibbles is a shadow of her former self without Alicia. She's a bit of a homegirl.

Gosh-she´s had 4 nights out?

Could she be trapped somewhere?

Or maybe she´s found a good food supply?

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 23/06/2010 19:20

Probaly not trapped anyway - we don't have close neighbours. Knowing Alicia she's probably in the overgrown wasteland wildlife area next the the veggies. There's a lot of clover there and it's one of her favourites.

Oh no .

One of ours escaped when we were trying to put him away and it took 20 minutes to catch him with the help of a neighbour.

DD regularly loses pigs in our overgrown garden. We have had greatest success in recovering them by putting out drain pipes. (But then they are used to having a bit of drainpipe to hide in in their cage.)

Any news OP? [concerned]

silver73 · 02/07/2010 11:33

Any news on Alicia?

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 21/07/2010 14:39

Not good news, I'm afraid, despite our best efforts we couldn't get her back and whilst searching last night we found her, but not alive.

Thanks for all your ideas.
