Am I mad to name a dog before I've even found him?

Still happily searching for a puppy, not found the special one just yet but am hopeful he will be found soon enough.

In the meantime, we have been thinking of names. I like oscar (come to think of it, I'm certain a MNer have a pup called that) and DS likes Lenny. DD likes Steve which isn't a doggy name uf you ask me lol

I don't think there us anything wrong with naming a dog before we find him, it just gives us something else to focus on and makes getting another puppy more real.

Has anyone else named a dog months before they got him/her?

I also named my DD about 5 years before she was born!

I know a dog called Steve! It is a bit odd, but what is in a name? Oscar is great, but what if your ideal dog is a girl?

I like Steve! I love people names for dogs. (Have already decided if we ever get another it will be an English Bull Terrier named Dave!)

Dill was Dill before we chose him.

my next dog (there won't be one!) will be Avery.

Think Steve is a fab name for a dog. No harm in naming - you can always change your mind if it doesn't suit the real thing.

I like Oscar, Lenny and Steve, all good names.

I have already named our pup and we don't have him yet, though he has been born

Have been on the breeders waiting list for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages, but is good as it means we get second pick of the litter (after them, natch)

Good luck with the puppy hunting.

My puppy should be born any time now, I just need to
find him.
I didn't search online last night, I fell asleep by 9, was exhausted.

I have also added another name to my list, buddy. DH though DS liked Lemmy but I don't like that. We all loved the name moby (which I chose) but we wouldn't use that again.

I'm suprised people like the name Steve for a dog, DD would be pleased lol

Yes. We've already named our golden retriever puppy who hasn't even been bred yet!!! He's going to be called Rollo....we think...unless another name becomes more popular before then with my twins and I. I named one of my twins before he was even conceived!!

Personally, I like less human-like names for animals but my twins prefer human ones so Rollo is a kind of compromise.

from the age of 14 i always wanted a curly coated retriever (piccy on profile) and wanted him to be called MAxwell. (not Max). Anyway fast foward 15 years and i finally got my curly lad but also had a ds 5 at the time who really wanted a dalmation! we decided he could choose the name for the curly and he choose Victor . So here we are anothe 3 years down the line with Victor. I still think Maxwell would have suited him but i am pleased we didn't call him it as his name suits him much better.

So really i still need a curly called maxwell and we are 17 years down the line .

I knew my next dog (now current) would be Molly long before we had her. Great names. One of my all time fave unusual dog names I have met was a "Norman"
