What to do with rehomed cat...part 2.

try again.

Long story short: we have adopted a cat from a friend of a friend. He (the cat ) is a 3 year old part Birman male. We adopted his sister 1 month earlier.

First night we got him, he managed to go out of the locked cat flap and had us worried for 2 weeks. Various sightings of him, eventually lured him back with food and kept him in for 1 week. He spent that week losing half his body weight and yowling at window. Despite this, he is really affectionate and a lovely boy.

We let him out again, and he has hung around but not really come back. Tonight i caught him with some smoked fish as bait and he is now sat looking sadly out the window. He is sooooo skinny and has eaten a bit.

So what do i do? We are very rural and he is from a built-up area of a city. Do I just accept he won't be a 'family' cat?

Burmese are weird. He may actually have another home he's going home to as well. Leave it a bit longer - keep him in three weeks or so. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid he may need to go elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice

Was thinking of keeping him in for longer, so will try the 3 weeks thing. Problem is he lost so much weight when we kept him in for a week, I felt like I was torturing him. I know it is for his own good but I feel bad. Any thoughts on how to stop him being so miserable?

He is actually very soft - has been sat purring on me for half an hour and tried to steal my tea earlier. Pretty sure he has no other home - very few neighbours and they all know about him anyway! Really want him to stick around [hopes]

Might be worth calling these folks for some advice too.

Are you sure he's not unwell? Is a trip to the vets in order? Is his sister well - perhaps they hate each other? Why was he rehomed in the first place?

HonestyBox · 09/06/2010 04:01

Is he neutered? If not he is most likely out looking for lady cats.

Thanks for the replies!

whomoved: he was rehomed because the lady who owned them died, and her husband couldn't cope. Gets on very well with his sister and seems healthy enough. Am going to get thim both microchipped this month so will get vet to do a check jic. Will check out the link too.

Honesty: he is neutered so no lady prowling. He is a big cat, very tall - and now extremely sleek. My sister thinks he looks like some sort of african/asian wild cat. She is a bit sad he is neutered as her cat is on heat atm (lives nowhere near us)!

As he escaped the first day, he had almost 2 weeks getting to know the area whilst living rough. Is it possible he just likes being outside? But he is obv not eating enough, so maybe a bad hunter?

Ah! He's pining then. Did you bring anything from his old home which smells like the lady who died? That may well help. Lots of fuss will help I think.

He may have worms though if he's losing weight. Esp if he's been living outside.

MammKernow · 09/06/2010 20:27

Pining, never thought of that but makes perfect sense! Recently wormed so likely not a prob and he is eating very little, just an initial hunger frenzy but small amount ifyswim. His sister out-eats him by 4-5 times and she is smaller.

Thanks for the advice, I'm off to feed him some chicken and give him fuss
