New kitten and existing cat...

I have a lovely ginger tom, he is about 2 yrs old, an ex-stray and came to us from the RSPCA just over a year ago.

He is great with the kids (3 and 5) and lets them stoke and fuss him without turning a hair, and he pals about (in a cat way) with the 2 cats next door and apparently 'plays' with a pair of kittens that live a few doors up.

He is an outdoor cat really and rarely comes in in the summer apart from to eat, I'm not sure if he's sleeping in someone elses house or whether he's just around and about.

I'd love to get a kitten too but am not sure if it would upset him? I work 3 days a week but the au pair and kids are around on and off during the day if this has a bearing?

I'd love an affectionate indoor kitten but don't want to drive Cat1 away.

Any advice welcome!
Thanks

We are the same as you andjst got a kitten.

Our cat is 3 years old and not affectionate at all, he comesin for food and the occasional stroke but he will be sat happily then bite out of the blue

We just got a kitte yesterday! Big cat came in, sniffed her and carried on into the kitchen, ate and left as usuall, he didn't seem bothered at all

So you got a female then? Was that on advice or just because you liked that particular cat?

Would love another though baby substitute

We got a female because it was an all female litter, but as he is neutered anyways (and she will be as soon as its possible) then I felt it was better to get a girl as I think a male might push him out of his teritory, iykwim?

He really didn't seem bothered by her and she is settling in great.

We have a rescue cat that sounds much like your cat Snail. She only comes in to eat or sleep in a secret place somewhere and is nice, but not very affectionate.

We got a kitten about 2 years after getting cat 1. At first there was a bit of hissing and wailing (from cat 1) and trembling and legging it (from kitten) but within days they had settled down and now they really like each other.

Cat 1 is still not that affectionate with humans, but much better than she was, and she has always mothered the other cat.

Cat 2 is super soppy. Always on my knee or curled up on our bed. She grooms the other cat when she's allowed.

I was advised to get a male kitten because Cat1 is female, and I did but Cat 2 turned out to be a female (?) and they get on brilliantly.

I'd say go for it. We are out all day and I think they like to have each other's company.

We introduced a kitten to out older cat a few months ago. Our older cat only has eyes for DS1, she won't come near the rest of us! Our (not so small anymore) kitten, is completely different, very affectionate and friendly. We had a bit of hissing and grumbling from them to start with, but they've accepted each other fine, and while they will never be friends, manage to tollerate each other pretty well.

Oooh I am becoming more and more tempted by your positive stories.

I might ring the CPL and see if they have any litters.

What age is it that they can leave their mums?
