is it pregnant? that can happen or internal organ falure which is sad but will die eventually sorry you cant prevent that

Right, take a look at it from above, are its scales sticking out like a pine cone?

If you tell us a bit more about your fish and tank I might be able to figure out what it is. What sort of fish is it, how big is the tank, what sort of maintenance do you normally do and do you have any water test results?

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 12:55

It's not looking good.

Fish is a gold fish and is about 6. One side is a lot more bloated that the other. the tank is big enough for him and the 5 other fish. Cleaned out at the weekend, no tests done.

One of the other fish's tail is drooping down and he looked really sad.

Are its scales sticking out?

The tank would have to be really massive to be big enough for 6 goldfish- 80 gallons at least for 6 fancy goldfish and 100 gallons at least for 6 common goldfish (sorry if this is old news to you but most shops don't tell people how big goldfish get).

6 isn't that old for a goldfish so I wouldn't suspect old age is causing any problems.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 13:56

There are 3 goldfish and 2 shubunkins. 2 gold fish are big the other fish are small and haven't grown much.

I couldn't really see any scales sticking out.

You'd need a tank of 90 gallons (410 litres) for 3 goldfish and 2 shubs. If you keep them in a tank that's too small it can cause stunting which might be what part of the problem is, stunting causes all sorts of health problems. Sorry again if this is all old news, you didn't say how big the tank was though.

Is the fish eating and pooing OK?

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 16:51

Not sure how big and yes, appears to be eating okay. Haven't looked for any pooing.

Fab, a 90 gallon tank is about 4' x 1.5' x 2'.

sweetnitanitro · 25/05/2010 16:57

A 90 gallon tank would be about 6 feet long.

You could try feeding him the inside part of a cooked pea, mashed up (don't give him the skin). This acts as a laxative so if he's got any blockage it might help clean him out.

Without water test readings and more info on the tank I can't really give you much advice. You can get water test kits off ebay fairly cheaply, you need to be able to test for ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte and pH. Does the water smell of anything?

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 25/05/2010 16:58

I will measure later. We did check it was big enough for the fish we have.
