That's it really - one of our guinea pigs has very long nails, and I wondered if this is something I could do at home or whether its a vet job?

Yes i do the guinea pig and rabbits nails. It is an easy job if they are well handled.

Well, I've kept the little things for 25 years so it's easy for me to do it. Although if I'm not concentrating I do draw blood sometimes .

Just hold them tight and don't trim too much at first. Little and often is best.

Do you just use regular human nail clippers? Do you hold them on your lap facing to your knees or towards you?

I use pet nail clippers. I hold her on my lap facing away from me.
I too have once snipped a little to far and drawn a little blood. DD's panicked!

Fortunately the one who needs doing is the most cooperative one, and is a bit of a softie, and goes very placid when being cuddled. They may not be when I catch the vein.

It is much easier if your GP has light coloured nails that allow you to see the blood supply inside: just make sure you don't cut short enough to damage that inner pink line.

If nails black, you need to cut more cautiously, but it isn't too hard.

I will now google pet nail clippers. She's white, hope she doesn't end up pink

Got mine from Wilkinsons. Pets at home may have them.

i keep checking mine and have never done them - they are relative;y free range so i think they wear naturally - would this be right as id hate to think i was neglecting them - they really look fine.

kolacubes · 18/05/2010 19:06

Had 2 before that never needed cutting, my other gp doesn't require theirs cutting. This one though has been sharpening hers i'm sure. They are were very long and very sharp.

Make sure you have some flour handy just in case you do nick the blood vessel. Dab some flour onto the end and it'll soon clot.
